i was wondering what the difference is between the standard nef scope rail and the nef ultra scope rail and which would be better on a huntsman muzzleloader anyhelp would be appreciated thanks in advance.

All scope rails are shown in the NEF Centerfire FAQs, the only difference between the Ultra rail and standard is the price and the length, the Ultra has a set screw on one end to provide additional support for large scopes and one more cross slot, not what most folks would need for a muzzleloader.

thanks quick i am going to order the rail from nef so i have the right one but am not sure what scope to get yet looked at an old post for a simmons shotgun/muzzleloader scope for $20 but also looked at a barska 3x9x40 for $25 don't know if either are very good but may fit the bill for me or may look a bit longer for something better any suggestions would be appreciated trying to stay under a $100 or less for a scope.

I would highly recommend you step up a little if you can afford it, although there are a lot of fellas here that like the Barska scopes, I can't really say I've seen anything negative on them. The Bushnell Banner is a great scope for the money, under $100, but the large ocular bell is a problem with hammer clearance unless you remove the tip of the hammer spur and add an extension which can be ordered with the scope rail, or use high rings. I'd do that before I tried the Barska, personally. You can read about the hammer modifications in the FAQs.

If you can swing $130, the Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 is a great little scope, I have one on my 500 S&W Handi, has great eye relief and is easy to mount on an H&R.

The Mueller Multishot 2-7x32 is another that would be a good choice for $140 if you would like an illuminated dot reticle.

the bushnell banner are you talking about the3x9x40 blackpowder scope or the 4x32 shotgun scope at the lower section of the page thanks for the help

I reallly like the Bushnell Banner scope that is made for a cantilever shotgun with up to 6" of eye relief. I have used one on a CVA muzzleloader and also a 20Ga USH and they work well.

They do have a big bell that makes you cut the hammer or use the high scope rings but with a MC stock, it is not a problem.

I have always used the 1.5-4X as I like that range for ML and Shotgun Slug hunting but they also have a higher powered one. I bought both of mine from Optic Planet and got good service and free shipping. Maybe one of these will work for you.
They do use the "circle plex" which I like but you may not.

Take your pick, but the 1½-4½x32 had plenty of eye relief and is real popular with 45-70 levergun shooters, I have one on a 45-70 Handi, is an excellent scope for the money.

i like the nikon but am leaning towards the but i think i can afford the bushnell a little easier unless i can find one on ebay then i might look at the nikon a little more thanks for the help i do appreciate it.

Last year I quickly bought a BSA for my huntsman. It has been fine, but I am planning to upgrade. I don't have the scopes that "quick" suggested, but his advice has gained my confidence. I do have both a Bushnell Banner and a couple of Muellers and the Muellers are better in my opinion. The scopes I have looked at conservative -Banner, middle line - Mueller, top - Nikon Omega (with the BDC reticle).

I'd suggest either the Bushnell Banner or the Nikon Prostaff. I have both and they work fine and are good optics for the money. You won't go wrong with either one.

i would like to have an omega but it is a bit out of my price range and i am just looking for a scope to start out with not sure if i will like hunting and shooting with scope cause i have never used one i looked at meuller to but still a bit high and like the prostaff to but $100 is my limit and would rather have new than used if at all possible so i am still looking for the right scope i am accepting all suggestions at this point just want something that will be decent starter scope for muzzleloader IMO i can't see putting high dollar scope on a less than $200 muzzleloader just my opinion.

I understand completely because I still struggle with it myself. However, I am starting to see that I will probably always be trading/unpgrading my rifles and muzzleloaders. If I have a good scope for each purpose, I will probably carry them over.

I am not a fan of spending more than necessary, but when my $50 BSA fogs up on me on a cool morning and I can still see a deer at dusk, that I can't pick up in my scope, I wish I had a spent a little more. A cheap scopes value goes to nearly nothing used, but good scopes seem to hold about 70-80% of there value used.

I am not trying to get you to spend more on a scope, I haven't in the past. Although, my opinion is changing.

the main reason is because as a full time student i don't have alot of cash i wouldn't mind spending a bit more but i think half the value of the gun is a good start i have a bit more in it with rings and base and better ramrod i bought i probably have somewhere around $250 in the gun but still find it hard to spend alot on optics and no matter what i get for it i will upgrade later on after i get out of school and back to work thanks for the help.

Here's another recommendation, the Bushnell Legend 2-7x32, I have one of these on my .444 Marlin Ultra(top one in the pic), fits fine in low Leupold PRW rings, it's a little more money than you're wanting to go, but you'll never have to upgrade it.

I bought that one from Graybeard, excellent scope! Midsouth is out of em now cuz I ordered the last one they had today, sorry!!!

The ocular bell is large, but the power ring is small enough for good hammer clearance.

i like both of those and looked they are a bit higher but not much my wife said she doesn't care what i spend but i am to cheap to spend alot on a scope am still looking ordered new scope base today and got new hubbard ramrod yesterday muzzleloader will be ready for hunting shortly just need scope,bullets,and more powder then will be ready for seasonthanks forthe help all of you.

i am not to sure about buying these but all of them have over 99% satisfactory rating and read some of the feedback all sound good will have to think a bit more about it if so i will get a nikon for sure would like the omega but not sure i want to wait on it unless i just order one from opticzone which would be not much more. Iwas thinking is 3.8-3.9 inches enough eye releif for a muzzleloader cause the prostaff says that is the eye releif where the omega has 5" eye releif just wondering thanks
