How about a dovetail on a short piece of weaver base and use a Millett angle loc windage adjustable ring on the front?

That's pretty much what I've done.  Plus I did some re-work of the rear tonight, to sole a canting issue that came up.  Thinned out the aluminum base to the rear ring, to allow it to drop further, and did use an adjustable ring on the front.  One trip to the range was a bust as things came loose.  Hopefully thet won't happen again.

I hope to get out in the next week or so, as I will have several gun projects to test out.

OK got to the range again today, finally, with the 38-55 with mixed results.

Still shooting BP and the cast bullets, and the newly modified rear mount (again).  Well it's shooting about 12" high at 50yds at the lowest setting.  I guess I need to raise the front somehow.

So just for kicks, I pick out some far away targets.  One was a piggie about 18" long at 200yds.  Nailed it 4 out of five times.  The bad part, was the rear mount was still at the LOWEST setting.

The good part, is this thing will probably lob bullets WAY out there at the top setting.

And so it continues.
