Scope bases for the Vanguard
« on: August 15, 2007, 06:06:19 PM »
I picked up my new Vanguard a few weeks ago and I am now trying to put the scope on it. The Leupold STD bases that the gunsmith at Gander Mountain sold me, are labeled for the Rem 700, part #50016.  He stated that the bases are interchangeable since Leupold states that the bases are also for the S&W 1500.  He went on further to state that the S&W 1500 and the Howa 1500 share the same receiver.

I am able to mount them on the gun but the rear mount that has the wind age adjustment screws hangs over the end of the receiver and will not allow the bolt to fully open.  If I flip it around the screw adjustment area hangs over the cartridge opening on the receiver.

What bases are yall using?

Thanks

Howa in Japan (not China, Korea, etc.) currently produces the Howa brand rifles and the Weatherby Vanguard rifles. Howa has produced rifles for others in the past like Mossberg, Interarms, and S/W. They have been around in this country for 30+ years as either Howa's or as re-badged rifles (Weatherby Vanguard for example). It's a solid, well made, dependable, rugged and accurate rifle. Not cheap 'China' crap. I know for a fact that any recent Howa receiver is drilled and tapped for Remington 700 bases. I do however strongly suspect that it's been this way for a long, long time. Of course you need to pay attention to long action vs short action with the one piece bases. As for your particular setup, you have it right, the windage screws do in fact 'hang over' the receiver just slightly. Don't worry about it, it's meant to be that way. Don't turn the base around so that the windage screws are facing the rear as you have found out you end up with clearance issues. As a side note I've always found it somewhat nessary to use medium strength Loctite on the windage screws. You want them to tighten them with a large hollow ground screwdriver snug but not super tight. As for me I mostly use Leupold bases and rings, they just work great. On my .308Win Howa I needed an offset front base to get the proper eye relief. Just my two cents.

I Just put a new scope on my Vanguard using Talley one piece rings. They're some of the best rings I've tried. You can get them at Hunt America.com. Or Google for Talley Scope Rings.

I'll second the Talley rings.....I've got two Vanguard Varmint Specials, in .223 and .308.  I haven't shot them much, but I like them very much.  Smooth, accurate, and just about perfect in every way.  Anyway, the Talley rings are great, light and solid.  As long as you don't want or need the quick-detach capability, I don't think you can get anything better.

Get a Midway USA catalog.  They have a list of what bases go with what receivers.  Might be able to find it on their website too.

Your bases are expected to extend over the loading port a little, it does no harm.

If you had the one piece base, as I do, you would have base over the full length of the loading port!  Put Your rear base on properly and don't sweat it.
Common sense is an uncommon virtue

Be thankful they are based on the the Remington 700 as this makes them inexpensive. Hangs over a bit - it will not interfere with your loading the rifle as the rear goes in / down first.

I can't help you with the bases but get at least medium height rings if you have any size scope at all. Scope rubs the bolt with short rings.
