steel shot in NEF pardner
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:53:38 AM »
ok, first m not trying to start up any arguements. and secondly i'm not sure this is in the correct forum. but i live near a local state game area for ducks and geese. they allow small game hunting, but you have to use steel shot.. so, i want to go squirrel hunting, but here's the deal, i have a NEF pardner 20gauge. mod choke.. can i , or will it , hurt my gun in any way to use steel shot, say no. 6 in my gun ?

If it's a newer model your gun should be fine. I'd use #4 in steel

how many squirrels are planning on shooting?. I guess you could eventually shoot the choke out but it would take a lot of shooting. If you are really concerned you could shoot one of the other more pricey non toxics like bismuth. It will pattern like full out of your mod choke most likely so I would definitely pattern it at your anticipated ranges.

Well this is my full time small game gun, so i shot it alot. i honestly just dont know if the steel shot will hurt my barrel or not.. that whole steel on steel . an di just am not familiar with shooting steel to know if it will eventually wop my choke out .. i shoot squirrel, rabbits , pats  regurarly with my little 20 gauge.. but never had to use steel.. i certainly dont need to hunt the preserve bad enough to shoot bizmuth ,lol ..

I think it'll be just fine to shoot steel with a modified choke. I have a NEF 10 gauge full choke and have been shooting steel through it for years now.the barrel looks fine.
 you should be ok.  :)
aim small miss small,

I shoot steel in my 20ga modified choke. I use #4. Steel doesn't hit as hard but it patterns tighter than lead. It hasen't hurt mine any that I can tell.

Ok, so maybe i'll try a box or two this year, then mic my barrel and see if it has opened up my choke..
maybe i could use another 20gauge anyhow...as the concensus is that it dont hurt anything to shoot the steel shot..
and i guess for the price of a new barrel, its not that big of a deal anyhow
thanks for the input...
