Forgive me for I have sinned--new 45-70 with Pics
« on: August 17, 2007, 03:05:28 PM »
Well we all know that everyone needs at least two 45-70's so I just got a second one--------------but it's not a Handi rifle. I have long longed for a Pedersoli replica so yesterday I weakened and bought a 1886 Remington rolling-block target rifle. It is magnificent. Forgive me my longings and my error!

Tomorrow it goes to the range.

Yup, you're forgiven, at least it's a 45-70, I have a Savage 111 7mm Mag on order. ::)

Yeah, that's why, didn't think I'd ever find a cut checkered walnut stocked Savage with Accutrigger for that price anywhere, so I ordered it.

Mc, how bout some pics of the '86??

Very nice!
I'm not at all interested in the range report and load development either. ;)

Re: Forgive me for I have sinned--new 45-70-- Plus Range Report
« Reply #9 on: August 19, 2007, 05:48:29 AM »
I loaded up some 405 grain 'Cowboy' cast bullets(cheap) with a low end(17000 C.U.P.) trapdoor load of IMR 3031. It took about 6 shots to get centered up at 50 yards and then I went to the 100 yard range to shoot for group. The gun, in spite of the fact that I used a low end load, was a bit hard to handle and I got a couple of 'surprises' including a fat lip because of the set trigger. The best I could do was about 8 MOA even though the sight picture was perfect with my old eyes. Disappointing for sure but I think the bullets are at least part of the problem. I need to find a source of better (and lighter) cast bullets locally. Also I wonder about 3031 for the 405 gr bullet even though it is a 'book' load-- I had never used it before. I have been reading about paper patching and may try this but I am concerned about gas cutting with smokeless powder. Any advise would be appreciated.

Not much of a report but I could post a picture of my fat lip to make it more exciting--------------------naw, I am ugly enough at the best of times.

Sorry about the unintended meeting with the rifle, that can be painful!!  :o

I'd slug the bore before you do anything with bullets, get some that are .001"-.002" larger than the groove size, then load em up with the same 3031 load. I'm partial to gas checked cast bullets, but using properly sized and lubed cast bullets should make for excellent shooting with smokeless with moderate loads from all I've read here and elsewhere. ;)

I still get the 'bore' and the 'groove' dimensions mixed up. 'Groove' is to the bottom of the groove right? ' Groove diameter' is bigger than the 'bore diameter' right?

Groove is the deep part or widest part of the bore, land measurements would be the narrow part of the bore.

I guess I was never meant to have a bolt gun, or the Handi gods have been riled, TGS just called, the Savage bolt gun I ordered has been discontinued. ::)
