I am in the mood to buy a couple of derringers.  Does any one have any experience or opinions on brand/model/calibers?  Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Woodrow

I have an American Derringer DA-38. It's a 38spl. double barrel, hammerless job that seems really well built. Not good for much past 15ft though. Barrels don't shoot too close to each other past that. Fun to play around with. and easy to drop in your pocket in a pinch.  KN

I have a Bond Arms Texas Defender chambered in 44 magnum.  If you haven't seen these, they are at  www.bondarms.com
The Bond Derringer is probably the best built derringer that you will find.  The frame is one piece and the barrel is another and is interchangeable, they have the extra barrels that you can order.  I can tell you this....the 44 magnum in a derringer with 260 grain Partition loads kicks like a mule.  It actually is painful.  Kind of funny to shoot though.  What I've done is load some 44 shot bullets up and some 44 specials.  I keep a shot in the bottom barrel and the hollow point in the top.  The shot shoot great out of this gun as well as the normal hollow points and such.  The accuracy has actually really surprised me with this one.  Give them a look before you buy.  Glenn

Guys,
The Bond derringers are indeed well built. They are fun to play with, but I don't think I'd ever carry one. The size and weight of these well built guns make them prohibitive to carry. If you can carry a gun the size of the derringer, I'd go with another 5 shot snubbie. 150% more fire power in about the same package.

Woodrow:  years ago I had a High Standard derringer in 22 magnum.  It was a well made little piece that you could slip into a pocket or a wallet type holster.  All the other calibers aside, including the 44s and 45s, the 22 magnum worked incredibly well.  I never used mine except to play with but a couple of fellas I knew had palm derringers, which were a Special Forces issue (at least to us) that took three shots in that caliber or, you could use the 22lr.  One of the fellas used his to get his butt out of trouble one night.  We didn't see the situation unfold but heard the shot.  When we got there to look, one man was down - the one with the bolo machete in his hand and our man was standing over him.  He had fired once with that derringer and the 22 magnum had created horrific damage penetrating and exiting the target.  Mortality was immediate as a result of the damage.

As a result, I had waited for years to find another High Standard but they sort of disappeared from the market.  I think they have come out again but I'm not sure.  Failing a derringer in that caliber I was hoping to see a semi-auto come along and two did.  One was the Grendel P-30, a farily large staggered magazine semi auto in that caliber with an interchangable barrel capability for longer shots and, the AMT 22 magnum version of the Hardballer.  Unfortunately, Grendel has gone out of business and either the stainless steel or the overall design of the AMT isn't conducive to reliability, as I understand.  I wish it wasn't so, as that caliber is pretty awesomely effective.  Hope this helps.  Mikey.

I still own a High Standard DA derringer in 22 mag, along with the carry wallet. It's illegal to carry it in the wallet but I carried it years ago before the small .32s came out. It shoots remarkably well.

Woodrow,
Checkout the American Derringer Website. American Derringer is based in Waco Tx (Yeah that Waco) and is currently manufacturing their verson of the High Standard Derringer (.22mag) as well as a Double action job in .357Mag, 9MM & .40S&W!!! They also make a Stainless & beefy version of the Remington Double Derringer chambered in everything from .32mag (Lady Derringer) to .45/70 (OUCH!!!) . I had a brace of them when I worked in a Grocery Store in the "wrong" part of town. One chambered in .45ACP and the other in .45LC/.410(2 1/2"). They were a hand full to shoot. Unfortunately I sold them but I still have a tiny Colt Lord Derringer to plink with  :)  .

WD242,
I doubt if anyone is making wallet holsters for these guns. They are specificly named by the BATF as an "Other Prohibited Device". You might find one of the original ones for sale somewhere but DO NOT CARRY IT! It is quite illegal! Sad but true. I own one of the 22Mag models with the electroless nickel finish with the wallet and the original box and paperwork. It stays in the safe for now, I'll probably pass it on to my son.
