Ruger Security Six

Picked up this Ruger Security Six new in the box at the Boise gun show in July. The face plate shows very little wear, probably only the rounds fired at the factory.

Those were nice old guns I once had one exactly like that. It's really one of the FEW Ruger guns I've owned that I actually have nothing bad to say about.

I have 3 of them (2-3/4, 4, 6"), and they are indestructable.

Two of mine are stainless, but the 4 inch is a blue "speed six". A wierd thing happens in the blue versions... the plunger that holds the trigger group in is stainless, and it is dissimilar enough from the rest of the frame that corrosion can set in around the contact area. Put some grease or anti-seize on the plunger before re-assembling it.

Also, check Brownells for their Ruger dissasembly tool. It looks like a bent up screwdriver with a notch cut in the end. It makes teardown a 60 second operation with a bit of practice. It works on the Redhawk as well.

Congratulations! The old Rugers are as nice or better than the new ones in my opinion.

The Security Six was always an accurate tough reliable gun.  If you find one that fits your budget buy it.     The reason the GP110 is heavier is to make recoil easier on humans.   The gun did not need the extra metal and weight.

I have a Security Six 6inch stainless .357 and it is one of my favorite revolvers! I also have a Speed Six 2-3/4inch in 9mm with a .357 cylinder also fitted to it, it is amazingly accurate for such a short barrel, although recoil is stout when used with full power .357 loads!

BTW what I have been told is that Ruger discontinued the Security Six line because when the 125 grain full power factory loads became popular, they supposedly caused erosion on the underside of the top strap if fired a lot. Not a problem with the 158gr loads (which shoot better in my guns anyway). I like the Security Six line MUCH better than the GP100, it is not only lighter (I DON'T like the full underlug on the barrel), but more grip styles are available. My favorite is the Pachmyer Presentation grips, which are not available for the GP100, at least not the last time I checked.

Great little guns those Security Sixes, my first centerfire pistol bought some 29 years ago, its a 4" ss with Pachmyer "Gripper" grips, the best fitting gun I've ever owned, shoots great too.

That was my first handgun. When I was 14 years old, I had a Yamaha 80 and sold it to buy a Blue 6" Security Six. It's the gun that started me handloading and shooting bullseye at the local range. I had a Lyman 310 hand tool for loading and used the Lee powder scoops. Someone stole the gun several years ago and I replaced it with a 6" stainless GP-100.
