Which brand?
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:31:47 AM »
I'm looking for a 3-9x40 rifle scope.  I think I've got it narrowed down to Nikon Monarch, Burris Fullfield II or Bushnell Elite 3200.  They are all relatively close in price, which would you recommend and why?  Thanks.

Johnny,
what are you looking to do with the scope? And how much do you want to spend?

The Nikon Monarch is optically superior to either of the other two.....

It'll be used for deer hunting (shots to 300 yards), and will be going with me on an elk hunting trip in '08.  Looking to spend $250 or less.  Thanks.

It's not appropriate to compare the Monarch to the Elite 3200 but rather to the Elite 4200. I personally feel the Elite 4200 is optically superior when comparing proper product lines. But yes the Monarch should be superior to the E3200 and the Burris both. I'd never recommend a Burris scope for any use but do highly recommend the E3200 line.

Of the three you list, I'd take the Nikon hands down.

ok, so between the Nikon Monarch ($199) and the Bushnell Elite 4200 ($259) which would you choose?  Is the Elite 4200 worth the extra $60?

Personally I'd take the Bushnell. I have ZERO Nikon products at my house. I've looked thru them owned by LOTS of others at ranges and when hunting and such and own NONE. I have several of the Bushnell E3200 and E4200 scopes however.

I would spend the extra $5.00 and go with the Elite 4200 3-9x40.

I've owned one of them and used both.  The 3200, I've owned and the 4200 I've used on two trips that belonged to my brother-in law.   The 3200 was mounted on a Browning BAR in 30-06, the 4200 was on a Browning bolt in .270.  I could not tell the difference between them.  Maybe it was my eyes but we compared the two in the field before the hunt and we could find no difference.  Compare the two and decide for yourself if you think the 4200 is worth the extra dough.  I didn't think it was.

I dont know why Leupold VX-I is not on your list?

Also, I have heard good things about the Mueller Tac II http://www.muelleroptics.com/products/MTAC31044.html  I have not reviewed nor handled this scope.  But a friend told me he thought is was in line with the scopes on your short list.
