Another Dead Rossi Revolver 461 .357 2" Blue
« on: August 21, 2007, 12:48:58 PM »
I wrote this on another gun board and just pasted it here. ::)

If I knew then, what I know now. ??? From Brian 8-21-07 from another gun board.

Word to the "cheap"

My "NEW" (Purchased 4/26/07) 461 .357 2" Revolver has broke and or failed for the second time .

I didn't really want a cheap gun, but I didn't want to fork out big bucks either, on a gun I wasn't going to shoot as much as my others at the range (Shoot the good guns instead, and keep the cheap one for a back-up. That's not an "oxymoron", is it?).

So I did a little research and found a gun page that has almost all current models and current prices. I ran across the Rossi 461 and found every body on that page said it was a great gun.

So I looked it up, and found a gun store on-line. The Rossi sale spiel was....

"The Rossi Model R461 in blue steel and R462 in stainless steel are snub nosed revolvers in .357 Magnum long regarded as the perfect round for self defense. This little giant carries 6 rounds and is as reliable as the day is long. The R461 is approved on the roster of handguns certified for sale in California. The Model R971 features adjustable rear sights, four inch barrel, six round magazine capacity and is covered by a lifetime repair policy. The R971 is approved on the roster of handguns for sale in California. The R972 has a 6 inch barrel for long distance accuracy and features adjustable rear sights. As with all Rossi revolvers, the 972 is covered by a lifetime repair policy."

"is reliable as the day is long"
"is reliable as the day is long"
"is as reliable as.............
"is as.....
"is...

So I bought one thinking, it's got to be "OK"

We'll folks, the World is coming to an end.

Long story longer? I shot a few hundred reg .38s through it with no problems. And finely decide to shoot just one (uno) .357 through it. Just one. That's when the poop hit the fan.
First the centerfire cap was breached and it tacked the shell to the frame like a mini weld. I finally got it broke lose, carefully mind you. And all seemed fine, until I tried to shoot it again. Gun seemed fully functional and the hammer came down, but it didn't fire. After looking over the gun, I realize the tiny spring that holds the pivoting hammer firing pin had went into space or it might as well have. I ended up getting a spring and repaired it. (By the way the springs are on back order and have been for over a month)

After reading other gun pages, I found a lot of negative comment's. So just in case, I bought a Ruger SP-101 for carry. And I'll keep the Rossi and see if those na sayers are correct and shoot the gun for practice and fun. FYI, I did like the gun. "Did"

So to make a longer story even longer. Now I'm in at about $800 now.

So I head out to the range a few more times but only shoot and will shoot .38 and .38 +p through it.

Anywho, I went out to the range last night and was shooting the Ruger with .mostly 357s and the Rossi only with .38s. I had ammo out for both of them. So I go to load up the Rossi unknowingly I'm putting .357 in it (oppps!), thinking they where .38s, and KABOOOOM! Something tiny smacked me in the face. "What the....!!!!!!" Oppps, I put .357 in my ".357." Why the heck did I do something stupid like that?

We'll now the hammer will not stay back when cocked, but still functions in DAO. Or does it?

Nope, gun won't shoot either. I guess the spring popped out again. Yep it sure did. That must of been what hit me in the face. (Kids wear your eye protection)

Now I have a nice paper weight, a $310 paper weight.

I hate dogging a company, or a gun without a proper explanation. I now hate that gun, and love my Ruger even more now.

I will never, ever, buy, or promote a Rossi, or another cheap gun, ever again. Leason learned, the hard and expensive way.

OUCH!

We'll I guess I have only one thing to do now, is of course, send it back, and wait tell it rains in Vegas again.

Sorry to say, and regretfully so.

End of another Rossi story.

Brian

PS, Looking forward to getting my CZ semi.

That is terrible!!  I have owned 2 Rossi revolvers for several years, with no problem. Both are .38 Special, though.
So now I will shy away from the .357 Mags. I do have a Ruger Blackhawk .357 6 1/2" Bbl. and I love it. I shoot
grapfruits at 50 yds with it.  I want a Ruger 101 3.57 3" Bbl.

That does sound bad. I have a 5 shot 44spl that is a great little revolver. One of the smoothest out of the box actions I have ever bought.

Update:

Ok, now let's see how the Taurus/Braztec customer service will be. Just had a fun trip to North Las Vegas, Down town, off of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. to the main UPS hub.

That was a trip! At least they don't have many drive byes during the day.

And besides an hour and a half of getting lost, using a few gallons on gas at $3 a gallon. In Las Vegas with these LA drivers. Ohh boy, that, ....was fun! Just the icing on the cake.

Let see, $236 for the gun, $30 shipping, $20 transfer fee, $25 brady tax, 3-4 gallons of gas at around $10 Time spend (Priceless) and $50 to send it back for repairs.

I'm up to $371 with this.

Ohh, and the dentist bill for gritting my teeth so hard in frustation, but I degrease.

Dice,
I know how you feel. I had a problem with a SPR94 that was not repairable, the folks at Remongton/Spartan kindly refunded my money.

That's great that remington gave you a refund. I'm sure Rossi would not do the same, so I won't ever bother.

Gun is going away though after I test fire it.

You'd do well adding Taurus to your list of things to avoid.  We get over 30% of both Taurus revolvers and pistols back within the first week of the sale.  Figuring in the type of people that buy one 20 round box of expensive self defense ammo that carry them home, load up and put them in a nightstand without ever firing, the total might be higher. To add insult to injury, Taurus will usually refuse to pay return shipping for one of these defective new guns, then add their three month turn around for a repair job that may not actually be done. The picture becomes pretty bleak.

Since Rossi is owned by Taurus don't expect their Customer Service to be any better. Ya buy South American crap, ya get South American crap. I'm sorry Dice, it was a lesson I learned the hard way, too, several years ago. "Lifetime Warranty" means you can keep sending it back for the rest of your life, over, and over, and over again, and it won't bother them in the least. Ya get what you pay for. I will never get another Taurus, or ever buy a Rossi.

The good news is that you now have a Ruger SP101. Probably the best small frame .357 ever made. My wife has carried the 3" model for about 14 years now, and loves it. I can't begin to guess how many thousands of rounds (.38s and .357s) we have put through it. I have one in .22 LR for a plinker, and that is one gun that will never be worn out.

I also got burned on a Tanfoglio Italian clone (EAA Witness) of the CZ once. That will never happen again either. Glad you're getting the real thing there as well. They are fine automatics. (Used by the Russian Special Forces!)

Again, sorry about the Rossi.

Update: Just got the Rossi back from Braztech on Monday, Nov 19 2007. Gun works, but it's a different gun, with no proof it's my gun.

I made a new thread today if you need more details.

I now own:

A CZ75 9mm, replaced my S&W Sigma 9mm. Very good gun, but........Ya know!

A Ruger SP101 .357, replaced my Rossi 461 .357

A S&W Model 327 M&P Aluminum .357 Mag, Revolver 8 shot. replaced my Taurus 608 4" 8 shot .357 mag Revolver. Great gun but.........Braztech

And now I'm updating to a new CZ Rami Sub Compact Semi 9mm for carry because the CZ75 is to heavy for carry.

Lesson learn. Rossi is the only gun I really regreted buying<Period

To bad, because it seems like a nice gun.

Got two old CZ52's, one in chrome, I love those 7.62X25 rounds.

My new M&P .357 Magnum Model 327-8 shot's. Count them. Very manageable recoil as you can see.

An Argentine posting under FerFAL had a few things to say about Tauris. They used to be really good, but one of the Argentine Presidents sold the plant to Brazil at less than scrap iron prices and pocketed the money. That was some time ago, and it sounds like the brand name has not recovered.

Anyhow, good gun if you get one old enough. Otherwise they make poor paperweights.

(As a side note, his story about living through an economic crash in Argentina is riveting reading. Google can find it easy enough, both on the web site and in a survivalist news group.)
