« on: August 22, 2007, 02:25:30 PM »
Well guy's it's been fun. I just ordered a Remington 700 SPS Varmint 243 the other day. I traded my 243 Ultra Varmint in on it and just sold my 280 Handi to cover the cost of the new rifle. I have met a bunch of good people on the forum and made some friends. I may still buy another Handi some day and will still be hanging around this forum.      Dale

Just kidding Dale. I'm sure you will be happy with the Remy. A buddy of mine has the same rig in 223.

Have fun Dale, but don't be a stranger, there have been several members that sold their Handis and turned to other firearms, but they don't all stay away, Handirifle is a good example, he still has the same name even and is an H&R owner once again. ;)

Been there, done that.  While the Handi isn't my main rifle (don't really have a main rifle), getting the target model has been refreshing.  Especially since I took on a caliber that many were having issues with, I'm learning how to make mine very accurate.  I think the Dixie will help (me) even more.

Dale...don't sweat the small stuff...the 700 is a good gun...nothing wrong with owning a few bolts besides a few single shots...I wouldn't trade either my Winchester HV 223 or my Weatherby Sub-MOA for nothing...and I am glad I have them...but...they will have to pry my 338-06 A-Square Handi from my cold dead fingers... ;D ;D ;) When you can afford it...pick up a nice 25-06 Ultra...and start all over again ;)

As enthusiastic as you have been since becoming a member and considering the guns you have "wheeled and dealed", I'll give you until you come across another deal on a Handi/H&R until you come back.  Say ... oh, a week or two.   ;) :D :D :D :D :D

Remember, many of us hang out at various sites, so you'll still be among friends.   ;)

Anyway, good luck and enjoy your Remington.

I to have just purchased a new bolt gun. A Remington model 7 in .260. Being almost 60 and never having had one, I just thought it was about time. But,.... give up my Handys',  Never ! I found some other seldom used guns in the back of the closet to trade away. And to my surprise I got more in trade than I paid for em. It was a good day.

I'm down to one Handi now, a 45/70 and while the little gun won't shoot as accurately as my Marlin it has acceptable accuracy and I find myself taking it to the range almost every time because is just fun to shoot.  I would miss having the little gun, you may find you also will miss having one.  Good luck with the Rem, I have an old 742 that shoots great and has never given me a bit of trouble.

Well I'm not going to be Handiless, but my .223 Ultra and .38-55 Target are going bye-bye at, or before the next gun show in Syracuse, NY (Sept. 15 & 16).  I am disappointed with both.  The Target has never shot well with factory or cast bullets, although it has a great trigger.  The Ultra is inconsistant and will not shoot m.o.a.  I want to be able to use the guns, not spend an inordinate amount of time messing with them.  I spent too much time at the range and not enough time worrying the 'chuck population this year.  I am keeping my 20 ga. Ultra Slug and the .22 Hornet Topper with the Mannlicher stock (it is also inconsistant, but too cute to sell).  A Savage 340D in .222 will probably go too.

I will shop around the local stores before the show for a suitable bolt-action .223, or will pick one up then.  I passed up a CZ 527 American a while back and am kicking myself.  I have a 527 carbine in 7.62x39 and love it.

NO, but more Handi's than anything else. They are fun and enjoyable...

Dale, I don't want to say you will be missed buddy because I am sure you will still be around to visit. I also believe you will again be the proud owner of another Handi in the future....<><....:)

My calling guns are a 17 Rem 700 and a 6x223 Sako and I have a Vanguard 243 for windy day coyotes but my fun in shooting comes from tinkering and reloading for my handis.  My calling guns are what I consider my work guns, they only shoot one load and are always sighted in.  My 38-55 Target Model is getting to that category.   My other two Handis 7.62x39 and 500 S&W are fun and I shoot a lot of different combinations through them. I buy whole handis for what scopes or contender barrels cost. Handis are affordable shooting fun.

Thanks guy's I have not gone anywhere and I will not. I plan on still hanging around. Mac I have had my eye on a 25-06 for some time and I can see owning one some day. BangOwl I have no  plans on painting it at this time but you never know. By the way I stopped by the gun shop today on my way home from work to drop off some more money. When I got there I ask him if got around to ordering it. He said ordering what. I said you know the 700 SPS 243. He said oh it must be the one that came in today. That just really amazed me. I just asked him to order it 2 days ago and it is in the shop now. He brought it out and I have to say it is nice. The triger really has no creep to it. I would guesse it is at about 5 or 6 pounds now but he said he would take it down for me. Any ways I will pick it up tomorrow after work and then off to the range I go. Dale

dw06 I think you would have to look for that report over there because it is not a Handi. I can tell you this though I have read several reviews in the last week about this rifle and many are shooting .75 and less out of the box. Some as little as .60. The guy's over there are looking for reviews as no one has posted any range reports yet. I plan on doing the Flitz thing to the barrel before I even fire it. I learned this from here.   Dale

Look at all the fun you will miss, no more 6 inch vertical strings, shotgun patterns and stuck cases, and if it ever pops open you will be in really deep doo doo.  You will get just plain bored with a rifle that that you don't have to close the bolt some special way for it to shoot.  Almost forgot, you will get real tired being able to rest any part of the stock on the bags when you are shooting.  You'll be back wanting a Handi rifle before the end of next week.  Larry

Dale, among other bolt guns I have, I have a Mod 700 ADL 30-06, Sendero 300WM, Sendero 25-06AI& M700VS in 308 in the safe. If I had to do a sell off, the Sendero's would stick around, that's for sure.

BTW, the 25-06 Ultra talk reminds me, big brother has a new, unfired one for sell.

You will love the Varmiter, you may need to adjust the trigger & bed the action, probably nothing beyond that to give you extreme accuracy. Good luck.

heck I just got one to try the 204 ruger cartrige out, and I love single shots... I may or may not become a died in the wool handi fanatic, though I become fanaticized easily... it seems.
It will be hard not to have a light inexpensive short rifle around once I get used to it... I just wish I could get just the barrels for the action and switch out without sending the thing to the factory..
I suspect that you will probalbay not be able to avoid coming into one or two even if you just use em and sell em down the road.. it goes like that some times.
good luck with your 700 that is one fine rifle and I have heard good things about the model you chose.
I have had several and all shot quite well out of the box for me.

;D  You'll be back!  I have one Handi-Rifle on sale, a .30-06, but it is not my primary.  My primary is a wood stocked Handi that began as a .45/70 and I just had to have a .223, then a .30-30, then a .243 barrel.  I just zeroed in the .30-30 and the .223 today.  What fun!  I have a Rossi single shot in .30-06...with iron sights that shoots just great.  I have a youth Model Remington 7 in .243...this and my Marlin .22 Squirrel Rifle are my only bolt actions.  And I have owned other bolts in my lifetime.  I once had a Ruger fetish and owned 3 Ruger 77's - .223, .243, .30-06.  Then sold/traded...o the life of a gun addict.  Buy, sell, trade.  It gets in your blood.  Handi's make it more fun cause you can tell your loved ones that the new barrels are cheaper than a new gun...and its the truth!
