Express Rear Sight Question?
« on: August 22, 2007, 06:50:14 PM »
For those who like, or use, the Express Type V rear sights why do you like them?  Do you give up accuracy over a square notch blade?  Are the Express blades only for quick snap shots or do they have other advantages. Do you set the round front bead at the bottom of the V or try to align the top of the bead with the top edge of the blade?

Yes!  It`s difficult to have the similar picture every time!

And I like them only for short distances - up to 25 yds.

I just got my first express sighted pistol, and had no trouble so far with hitting accurately out to say 60 yards but did not try farther out yet. I do not think it will give me any trouble once I learn to consistently keep the entire front rounded gold bead visible the same way each time.
where I can see a problem is with extreme long range shooting where the front sight post/blade is centered in the rear square notch but the top of the blade is above the tops of the rear notch... like when folks use horizontal gold bars at intervals down the front sight to give different aiming points for holding over...
with my smith 44 my sight picture stayed the same for up to a hundred yards and kept the shots fine for shooting a deer sized animal at that distance when shooting paper. I did not have to choke up on the front sight, so I am not expecting a big problem for my distances... I am also considering whether it would work to use the gold bars across the front of the front sight for hold over but I have not worked that out yet.. I will let you know..
when I asked the same question, I was told there are folks around this board that use the express sight without finding it a limitation.... it is not a target sight however and I do expect that it could be more difficult to shoot with the same consistency as a patridge front sight and excellent rear sight... I just do not thilnk at this point I will have to change mine, but I will ceratainly fess up if I find out otherwise.
