Super Blackhawk Hunter -- Bisley Grips or Regular???
« on: August 23, 2007, 03:45:31 PM »
I have been wanting a revolver to hunt with for a while, and after fighting with myself over .357 vs. .41 vs. 44, and Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, etc., I have finally decided to go with the Super Blackhawk Hunter version in stainless, .44 mag.  Probably won't scope it, but at least I'll easily have the option.

Anyhow, my only question left is:  Bisley grips or regular??  I have heard that the Bisley grips are more comfortable on the hands when shooting as far as recoil goes, but have not and will not be able to try one out before buying.  I do have an old Iver Johnson .22 that appears to have the Bisley style grip (although I never knew that's what it was called).  It does feel more comfortable that other .22's, as there seems to be more room for your fingers (longer maybe).

It would be great to try one out ahead of time, but nobody around here carries it, and I don't know anybody with one.  Therefore, I just have to order on faith and the word of others.  Anyhow, I'd really appreciate your opinions on this, as this is a big purchase for me.

Thanks in advance.

I've had 5+ different ruger vaquero's / blackhawks and would definitely recommend the bisley grip they are much more pleasant to shoot personally for extended periods of time a few people may say that it comes down to grip technique but i have always found double action and bisley style grip frames more forgiving in the recoil dept.   good shooting , justin

Can't speak for the Bisley, but I own a SBHH with regular grip. I replaced the factory wood with a Hogue rubber grip and I'm very pleased with that setup. Recoil was not a problem, but I just find the Hogue more comfortable, though it may be too large for those with small hands.

If you're going with the Bisley you'd better hurry up, they have discontinued the model and the prices are getting steep real fast.

In my opinion recoil is mild enough in a big 44 that that doesnt come into play when deciding. But that being said i like the feel of a bisley better. Maybe its because i shoot them more then about anything. Only design i run away from fast is the square back dragoon grip frame as it beats up my middle nuckle even with lighter 44 mag stuff. Just isnt made for my hand but the standard blackhawk frame works for me up to even heavy 44s and 45s in light guns for handling recoil. Anything more powerful then that needs a bisley in my opinion.

In Ruger single actions I have 3 Bisleys and two regular Blackhawks. For the big bangers, it's Bisley all the way.

I think you'll find the majority will say "Bisley".  I made a set of "oversized" grips for my regular grip frame BH and love them....so does everyone else that has fired it.  With heavy hunting loads, the regular grip will slide back in your hand and stop abruptly when the back of the hammer hits the web of your hand.  With the Oversized grips, my recoil slip stops at about the halfway point.  I actually prefer the regular grip because I shot 1911's for years in USPSA competition.  The angles are very similar, so the frame feels more natural in my hand.
