300 sjhp core-lokt bullet out of 45/70 for blackbear
« on: August 23, 2007, 10:49:57 PM »
I want to know if you guys thing I was wrong to laugh at a cop at the range. He was shooting a 45/70 marlin he was a great shot he was telling me he was going black bear hunting up in michigan. The rifle was sighted in with Remington  300 sjhp core-lokt bullets. This is where I started to laugh he told me he shot a deer less then hundred yards with this 300 grain bullet. He said it  mushroom out to bad it didn't go all the way threw. He said it was a bad choice for black bear. I think he was pulling my leg about the deer story.:D

Black bear is a soft-skinned game.  A 300 grainer out of a 45/70 is plenty.

I've heard the 300 grain Remington expands rapidly.

While I haven't killed a black bear yet, I just finished loading the 300 grain Remington JHP over IMR3031 and plan to carry this load in December during our short bear season.

With a bit of luck I'll find out! ;)

I like the hornady 350gr best for all round hunting.

I prefer a hard cast bullet myself. I use the 405 gr. hard cast bullet from Montana bullet works.

I dunno.  I've only taken one animal with the  Remington 300 gr. Core-lokt, hollow point bullet (factory load).  I muffed a VERY close shot at a smallish whitetail doe (maybe 15 yards!).  Anyway, I pulled a simple broadside shot into the scapulas.  The bullet made it through both shoulders, but I had to throw the front quarters away.  I've never seen such devestation.  My one time experience would lead me to believe the 300 gr. Core-lokt is a very soft bullet.

I'm planning to use it during deer season this year.  I have it loaded with a heavy load of Re#7 and my worry is about over expansion.  The problem is that it is so dang accurate out of my rifle.  If it takes the back side out of a deer I guess I will switch to the 405 SP even though they are not as accurate in my rifle.

No doubt the 300 JHP will kill one but it would not be my first choice for black bear.  They do expand rapidly, especially if you push them over about 2100 fps.  But if you put it in the right place it will do the job.  I really like the 300 nosler partition bullet for bear.  Rev

For what ever it's worth...I think a 300 gr hp is too lite for bear.  I've shot 2 bear though not with a 45/70...though I'm tempted to.  Next year I'm doing black bear in northern Maine.  My experience with the 45/70 is on hogs of which I've shot 8 ranging from 150 to 400lbs.  I like the 350gr sp from speer.  It's worked so well I can't begin to think about other bullets.  Just my 2 cents.

BTW...I think I'll be using a .300win w 200gr NosABs because I haven't used the rifle on game since a 1994 moose hunt in Newfi.

i know this wont fit with accepted theory,but..went bear hunting with 4 aleut friends about 3 weeks ago, brown bear,i carry 45/70 shooting405 grain j.f.n from buffole bore these are magnum loads and limmited in the guns they can be used in.  the thing is i really felt over gunned these alaskan natives all had 30/30 leaver actions with one exception a bolt .243.we all got bears in the 8 ft range, some seals and a few black tails, these are the only rifles these guy's use and used the are ,not very pretty to look at and i'm sure the bores are scarry ,never saw them wiped down much less cleaned(rian and salt spray every day) well next year i wont carry anything this heavy or that has this much recoil, maybe a.270

I shot a deer with this bullet @ 1800 fps.  It hit between the shoulder blades at 20 yards.  It came apart like a hand grenade.  I would not use it again for deer much less bear.  Use the hornady 350 or 300 HP.

My preference is the 350gr Hornady flat nose. The 350gr Hornady round nose is to much and the 300gr. Hornady hollow point is to little. Wouldn't expect much more out of the Rem hollow point. I shot a 300lb sow high and it hit the spine and stopped the hollow point.....but it did knock three vertebraes out of the spine. It didn't have to penetrate much as I was shooting well downhill and it just flat stopped but, it did have expansion. Yes, it killed the sow also but, I am glad it wasn't boars that day.

I used the Rem 300 gr. JHP @ 1750 +/+ fps to kill one deer.  I will not use it again.
