REVOLUTIONARY HOWITZER, 1700s
« on: August 24, 2007, 12:41:18 AM »
Was looking around and found this as a possible future purchase.
It’s a revolutionary howitzer, made by Hern Iron Works. I have read most of the posts on this site and most have good things to say of the company but I can not find any direct references to this gun. Would any one care to give me their thoughts on this?

Also, I can’t seem to find what kind of carriage would be used or would be appropriate for this.

Thanks for you help in this matter.

Sorry I did try to post a photo, did not work

That looks like the 60 lb King Howitzer.  There was a long thread about it a while back.  Also, there are a couple of articles available that discuss the King Howitzer.

VERY similar, except perhaps for the handles.

George, you mean the entire gun weighs 60 lbs,is that correct.  If I remember right that gun was a 4 PDR or something like that.

Yes, the barrel weight was 60 lbs in the final version.  It was 2.75" bore which is about a three pounder.

This is our King Howitzer. The Tube is not from Hern and it's subbored (only 1 1/2 inch bore)

Thanks for all the info and for the photos. The Hern Iron works site gives this info

Scale -- Full ; Trunnion Diameter -- 3 1/4" ; Bore -- 3" ; Length -- 25" ; Weight -- 90

and another part of the site said its 104 lb, I don't know which is right.

By the way, the photo of the howitzer makes for a pretty nice background for the computer
screen.

Thanks again.

Well, a 3" bore and a weight of 90 lbs are both too large for King howitzers.  Must be something else.
