.45 magbolt mag hunter
« on: August 24, 2007, 07:35:09 AM »
picked up a CVA .45 mag hunter this spring for $70.00 (used like new condition with breech plug tool and box of 209 primers and six .357 180 grain hornady sabots). thought i got a decent deal. anybody have any experience with this gun? any load recommendations? guy i bought it off of was loading 150 grains of loose 777 and said it was grouping well. have read that it's not tested for that kind of pressure. i didn't really need the gun as i already have a rem.700 ML .50, a TC renegade flintlock .54, and a Hopkins Allen .50 percussion that i built 4 years ago. guy needed money and i had room in the gun cabinet for ONE MORE!!! you know how that goes!!! appreciate any feedback youn's can give me. first time posting on the CVA site but have posted on the concealed carry and remington sites. thank you and hope to here from some of you.  SERT01

I have a 50cal Magbolt that I like quite well. If you didn't get a manual with the gun you can download one from www.CVA.com. You will find that the max recommended load of loose powder is 100gr. 150gr is for pellets. That said I have, on email approval from CVA, shot up to 120gr of 777 2F under some lighter weight bullets. This gives similar performance to 150gr of pellets. Notice: Do not use this load without personally getting an OK from CVA.

Good luck with your new toy.

It's better to shoot for the sky and come a bit short than to shoot for the ground and hit every time. After all, the ground is just a place to start, the sky's the limit.

Congrats on your purchase! I have a cva optima and was under the impression the max load for loose powder was 110g. I have found I do not need that much anyway. 100g of 777 2F will throw a 300g xtp or shockwave 100 yards pretty consistently. I figured around 1600fps "ballpark".

Enjoy the gun!

got up to the range today and finally shot my .45 magbolt hunter. 100 grains of jim shockey gold and a 180 grain .357 hornady xtp. could only shoot the 25 yard range as the 50 and 100 yard ranges were in use. it was putting rounds almost in the same hole using the open sites. next trip ,i'll probably put a scope on it and shoot for distance. really pleased with the results so far though.
