Year (Summer) of the Raccoon
« on: August 24, 2007, 03:26:54 PM »
I don't know what it's like in the rest of the State, but here in Southwestern Pennsylvania, the summer of 2007 needs to be dubbed as the "year of the Raccoon". I say this because I've seen more roadkill raccoon's this year than the last 5 years combined. Usually it's the groundhog that's the king of the roadside suntan bloat, but the 'hog's can't even hold a candle to the raccoon's this summer.

The guy's at my gun club have said the same thing. It's like every mile there's a dead raccoon on the road. Must have been a good spring breeding?

Is it like this in other areas of Pa?

I live in SE Pa, and get up into the Pocono region fairly often. I can't say I've seen an unusual number of Raccoons. I've seen more possums than anything.

I live in Bedford county & I haven't seen any at all. Have seen alot of road kill skunks this year. But better yet, I haven't heard any coyotes in a while & the white tail population is looking alittle better this year. I have a doe & 2 fawns coming into my back yard. Also 2 people telling me there's 2 trophy sized bucks in the woods behind my house. 8)
