6.8 Rem SPC Contender
« on: August 24, 2007, 04:09:33 PM »
I recently bought a 23" 6.8 Rem SPC Contender barrel for an upcoming Antelope hunt. Accuracy on this barrel is  super, .650" 4 shot group at 100 yards from a solid rest. This was Remington factory 115 grain open tip match bullets  that I ordered from Midway. BUT, only about half of the rounds would fire, the rest just dented the primer. Has anyone else run into this  problem? I am shooting an older original Contender frame. Could it be a weak hammer spring? I have not had this problem shooting factory Remington ammo with my .223 barrel . Thanks in advance for any information.

Maybe the primers are seated too deep. You can get a go/no- go gauge to measure this.

I was talking to one of the barrel makers at T/C a couple of weeks ago and asked him about his thoughts on the 6.8. He told me that the round has a lot of misfires and felt it was the ammo but didn't explain why. You might check with them or your barrel maker.  Good Luck!

Do you have a hammer extension? if so try removing it.

I have a new encore frame with a 24 or 26 inch barrel... no hammer extension... out of 20 rounds of Remington ammo, 10 will not fire.... primer is lightly dented... some fire after a second and sometimes a third try... no problem with other ammo or hand-loads... I am thinking it is hard primes since they might be for military use.... the primer pockets were the correct size... some thing happens with my 6.8 pistol barrel on the contender frame... This is a first problem i have had with Remington ammo... good luck, Ohio bill

I've been working with a 6.8 factory T/C bbl on my old pre-easy open contender frame. I have not had any misfires or light primer hits with my combo. I have had some poor accuracy so far, but no misfires. I have NOT fired any factory ammo, Rem or otherwise. All my rounds have been handloads. No one in the Phoenix area seems to carry the 6.8 ammo to try a box.

I think you should replace your hammer spring before you try anything else.
