Cast in Raging Bull?
« on: June 05, 2003, 04:13:53 PM »
Anybody using heavy cast bullets in the ported Raging Bull?
How much lead accumulates in the porting and how often is it
necessary to clean it out?  Any tips on how to clean the ports
of accumulated lead?

Cast in Raging Bull?

Got two of them. Both the .454 Casull and the .480 Ruger. I shoot far more cast bullets than jacketed and always have. Haven't seen any need to clean the ports on either so far. It really just ain't a problem.

I've never owned a ported handgun (or rifle) but I would think that with all the pressure developed by a magnum handgun cartridge that the ports would be cleaned out on every shot by the gas that is released. :?

Does it work this way?

Will begin load developement with hard cast 340 gn.
I have always shot mostly hard cast in my handguns, but
was somewhat concerned about the ports loading up and
causing a problem, glad to hear from others experience that
it will not be. The .454 is definately a winner with the factory
Win. 260 gn. load on hogs.  Will see what it will do when loaded
up with cast.
Thanks again,

i have shot a lots of cast bullet our my RB 6.5" in .454 Casull. from 270 gr till 335 gr, all with gas check.

I have never cleaned the barrel and the ports more often than with 250 gr XTP bullets. The only problem if you shoot inside a close shooting range is lead poisoning.

I like the RCBS 300 gr Keith and all Ballistic cast LFN bullet over 300 gr with my RB.

I don't think you'll ever see any leading in a Bull port because the ports, are in a larger than the bore, combustion chamber on the end instead of part of the rifled barrel. The bullet doesn't touch any part of the port. I would figure if the ports were actually cut into the groved barrel, leading would occur. I get just some powder smudging at the ports from heavy loads of WW296.
