Detailed questions about the Norinco 1897 shotgun
« on: August 25, 2007, 12:34:26 PM »

1. I have read that the models after the serial number 400,000 (4th generation) are more desirable than earlier versions. Essentially, that the never versions are much better than the first versions - True or False?
2. Are "take down" versions available?
3. Are there any sources for parts online? Where?
4. Will Norinco 1897 and Winchester 1897 parts interchange? What parts will not interchange?
5. Is Coyotecaps the person that does the best work on these shotguns? What are his opinions on them?
6. Can choke tubes be installed? Will that disqualify them from CAS?
7. Your overall impressions of the shotguns?
8. Are there more Norincos or Winchesters at CAS meets?
9. Is the metal "soft" or has it demonstrated that it will last a long time? That is, are there a lot of complaints that parts keep breaking?
10. Do the newer versions still have the trigger disconnect?

Any help would be appreciated.

1. Mine is 0100XXX serial number range and I believe was made around 2002. I have not had any problems with it although I shoot most matches with a SxS. The wood coloring on mine looks like the stock is plastic and I know the new ones have nice wood. Cap went to the factory in China a couple of years ago and suggested improvements which have been implemented.

2. As far as I know they do not offer a take down version.

3. Coyote Cap and Long Hunter both have some parts.

4. Some parts will, others won't

5. Cap does outstanding work

6. Yes you can use choke tubes as long as they don't protrude past the barrel.

7. I have both the 97 and the Norinco SxS. You get what you pay for, but with a little work they are good guns.

8. Probably more Norincos.

9. You don't often see shotguns fail. What I see more than anything else failing are the older Winchesters that just wear out.

10.Don't know.
