E.R. Shaw Barrels
« on: August 26, 2007, 11:07:08 AM »
Anyone have a rifle with a E.R. Shaw barrel?  If so hows it shoot?  I was thinking of re-barreling a Rem. 700 I have in 6 BR.

I had shaw rebarrel a winchester model 70 in 35 whelen for my dad a few years ago. They did a great job and turn around time was what they quoted.  The blueing they did was very good adn the barrel has proven to be quite accurate.  I would use them again.   One thing I did notice is that they leave a lot of metal around the chamber part of the barrel, making it hard to fit into the factory contour stocks.

I built a 338/06 on a Mark X action and had Shaw install the barrel, bead blast and blue everything.  The rifle shoots great very accurate.  I wouldn't hesitate on using them again.  I think for a small charge they will match your factory barrel contour.  Another great barrel maker is Montana Rifle Company  this is their link.  They are more money but WOW and way worth it.

I've put a 223 AI, 338-06, and 6.5x55 (love those Midway sales) on 3 Savages. They all shot under an inch. Took me 30 minutes to change the barrel on each. Very happy for the price.

I used ER Shaw for a Mauser Project I did and also to rebarrel a Ruger 77. Both rifles shoot great they are both 1 moa. They are definetly not the quality of Lilja or Kreiger but than again they don't charge what they charge either. I would use them again.

Here is the rifle I had them rebarrel for my dad.  It turned out really good.  Accuracy has been decent with most loads shooting around 1.5" and a few that will drop below 1" fairly regularly.

My experience with Shaw barrels are exclusively on the Mossberg ATR's.  They have a nice recessed crown and seem to be of a medium weight.  1- 1 1/2" groups are the norm for my .30-06, with a few sub 1" groups thrown in.  All with factory ammo.

My buddy's .243 ATR shoots one hole three shot groups with Power-Shok's regularly.

They rebarrelled a Siamese Mauser for me during the late 70's.  As I recall the job was well done and fairly quick.

The barrel shot pretty good for what I wanted it for, "minute of bucket" so I had no complaints.

I notice not too many of the target guys use them but for a hunting rifle they are great.

Mine brought home enough game to keep me satisfied.

I've had two barrel assemblies fabricated for TCR-87 guns in 20-ga with fully rifled barrels. One barrel blank was an E.R. Shaw and the other was a Verney-Carron, made in France and sold through Hastings. The Verney-Carron barrel is much smoother than the E.R. Shaw barrel. When clean it is about like looking down a glass tube. The edges of the rifling are sort of radius-ed and shallow. The E.R. Shaw barrel has a couple rough spots on the corners of the rifling which seem to catch plastic from the plastic sabots of slugs or cloth from cleaning patches. However, the E.R. Shaw barrel seems to be at least as accurate as the Verney-Carron. They was an article in one of the gun magazines a couple years ago or so where it was said that E.R. Shaw barrel quality is much better than in the past.

I have had two rifles barreled by Shaw, a 98 Mauser and a Ruger M77. The quality was excellent as far as fit and finish for both rifles as far as how they shoot I have not had enough time behind the trigger with them to speak with authority on that yet and now the weather has turned too cold to do much shooting so they will both have to wait for warmer weather. But both showed great promise from the little I have shot them.
