Bla bla bla...go preach ethics in church,we are out there to kill game, how we choose to do it depends totally on our SKILLS and our personal preference, and it truly only matters how we feel about it,your opinion of how its done means less than nothing to me.I take long range shots even when i could possibly get closer,I shoot deer in the head,I spotlight varmints and I enjoy the hell out of it,all of these are considered unethical by those who dont or cant do them.Laws are constant, ethics are completly based on personal opinion.

seems like 2 questions of ethics , one have you paid the dues to be able to make the shot and second to look for the animal !
like i said ethics is different for different people , if you insist i accept your ethics then i would have none ! that is why trying to pass laws that force morals and ethics on people often fail , where as laws that make sense are most often followed !
I often feel that those that try to inflict their morals and ethics on others must have done something they have a difficult time living with and don't want anyone else to do it , maybe in fear the others won't have a problem with it !
I have no ethical or moral problems with my 2506 or any shot i have taken with it !

No, I think ethics are a pretty constant thing.  Whether or how much a fellow chooses to ignore them is what varies.  A humane kill is what we're looking for.
A properly equipped fellow that practices at distance year round may be a more ethical hunter at 400 or 500 yards than some guy that drags old Trusty Rusty out of the closet the night before the season opens --"Dang, I thought I had more than 7 bullets left. Oh well, I don't need no sighters."-- is at 100 yards.  The same deal with the "specialty" shots, head, neck, ear hole, eye.
Where the ethics comes in is regardless of what sort of shot your make or how the deer reacts or even doesn't react, you have to go to that spot and make a honest and determined effort to see if you hit the deer and to find the deer.  Often, only you will know if your effort was indeed honest and determined or if an effort was even made.  And that, my friends, is ethics. And it is not a situational thing.

Every body has made good points...and I agree with most of what has been said...however...I do dis agree with the laws being constant...They aren't...and they can be interpreted differently...by people in different regions of the country...It happens all the time...which is why they have a court of appeals...Same for what is constituted as ethical behavior...Different regional differences..different backgrounds..different beliefs...different social-economic differences...All of these things allows individuals to do and to see things differently...Which is why folks shouldn't put their values on others and expect them to be just like them...They may not understand " the why " of hunting  of big game or shooting varmints...and some how justify their reasons over that of a law abiding individuals rights to do this...This is where the problems come in...It always happens when some folks think they are better than others...and refuse to mind their own business...the bad part is...they are becoming more numerous than us...and are scared because we have guns...and they don't...

;D Try to interpret our game laws your own way and you will find yourself CONSTANTLY in jail and broke! We all have a set of rules set by our state F&G that determines our hunting regs, you can argue them all day long, all it will get you is a ticket.

When I was a workin stiff, I was pretty adept at reading and interpreting the Tax Code. I could write appeals and bla, bla, bla with the best of 'em. But, when it came fall....and time to read and decipher the annual "Hunting Digest" it was like trying to read Chinese. "You can only shoot an anterless deer with a non-longgun if the hunter is no less than 25 feet from a parked vehicle and that vehicle is legally parked on a private or public non-thoroughfare and the caliber of the non-longun is no more than .421879768652 and no less than a wooden nickel provided the nickel was made prior to 1963. For the definition of a non-longun see section b:90:fg:101 and the definitions therunder on pages 44,66, 88, and 163. ::)

I'm not trying to interrupt any laws myself...nor recommending any one else to do so...What I am saying is how some judges & juries interrupt them...and the need for an appeals court to get some of the stupid rulings against us over turned..

Can't say i have a problem understanding the hunting laws , and I hunt waterfowl in both the USA & CANADA , for sure there is conflict between state and federal law but federal wins , i have had state game wardens tell me i would have gotten a ticket if a fed game warden had checked me , but i knew that ! in this case a friend picked up a bird i shot and carried it out , no one went over limit , just who carried it out !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

In Iowa we can hunt the roadside for pheasants. It would be nearly impossible to shoot any from the roadside if they had to be in the airspace over the road. That is, it is OK to shoot then in the airspace over a farmers field. After all, any airplane can fly in the air space over a farmers field. About 20 years ago I asked a game warden if it would be OK to shoot a deer on farmer's land if one is shooting from the roadside. Or would it be OK to shoot a running deer if all four feet were off the ground, after all, it would be in "airspace". The game warden did not answer my question, but sort of blew his stack. More recently another game warden told me it would be legal to shoot a pheasant flying, but not a standing deer, and again got a little angry. This fall there is a new law. One cannot shoot a deer standing on a farmer's property from the road or the property of another farmer without the permission of the farmer whose land the deer is standing on. I think the new law is because we can now hunt deer with rifles with a 400 yard range. In the long ago past when shotgun slugs were 50-yard weapons one would have the legal capability of shooting animals some distance onto private property. I bet that over the years there have been lots of hunters have been given tickets for shooting deer from the roadside which were on posted private property, even though there was no law against doing so. I don't necessarily disagree with the new law, but then again, I did not disagree with the old law. We have publicly owned and publicly managed game on privatley owned land. Our laws do not necessarily reflect what is right or wrong, but more what was legally agreed upon. For example, isn't it morally OK to hunt public owned game on the publicly owned roadsides. I think so. Then why is it OK in Iowa but not Nebraska?

i guess because its like speed limits 65 in one state and 70 in the next , why have states if everything was the same ?you have it easy , in Va. one county buck shot only next county , slugs and buck shot , next county rifle 15 feet above the ground , slugs and buck shot ok on ground , one county a loaded gun in truck is ok the next one its a no no , the next one its ok for a shot gun but not a rifle ( a county that does not allow rifle hunting ) ! one county i hunt you must be 12 feet off the ground to use a ML but a slug gun is OK on the ground ! hey we can shoot turkey with a rifle in the county where i live but  we can't hunt deer with one ! now you see why the duck reg's are easy for us !
a camel is a horse built by committee , the game laws are also from a committee !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
