New OE in 50cal. MZ, 270 & 308
« on: August 26, 2007, 04:46:51 PM »
Well, the wait was longer than I wanted, but I finally have my new OE. I wanted another MZ to play with & I like the specs. of this one very well. I wanted a 308 barrel as a light counterpart to my Rem M700VS in 308 & I went with a 270 barrel to use on my Oct. trip to WY. for Antelope/Mule Deer. I have always used either a 30-06AI, 300WM or 25-06 & AI on my Western trips & it seems almost a sin that I have not used a 270.  :-[  So, hopefully, I can correct that flaw!!  ;D

Big brother loaned me a Weaver 4.5X14 for load testing until his new RRA comes in!

Anyway I wanted a thumbhole with camo & in stainless. What do you think??

I love the way this gun is balanced. I will have a range report when the temp. backs off a little.

Good looking rig.  Where did you get the scope base?  I am running into the problem someone called in a different posting the"tuning fork".  My scope is a Leupold similar in size  to this, but the only available bases my shop was able to find put the rings on about 2.5" centers.  Just barely enough to clear my turret assembly.

Get the Durasight 1-pc base, the Warne and Weaver 2-pc bases are only practical for small scopes. :-\

I bought the Durasight at a local gunshop that sells alot of OE's. Midway & others sell the Durasight, it's the way to go for now.

I don't know if you've noticed it or not Nomo, but next time you shoot it you'll find that you have very little muzzle lift also, even shooting free recoil.  ;D ;D ;D  Digger

Nice little combo you have put together Rod. I look forward to hearing your success with them too. I think that Weaver is a good addition for your intended purpose too. But I am sure it will stay dressed out nicely in the future though.

I WAS looking forward to it too, but the 270 barrel (the one I wanted to take to WY.) would not cooperate. Sooo, I have put this project on hold. I know that CVA would take care of the matter, but I will head to WY next week & I have precious time left to find the problem. I kept the 308 & 50mz tubes to go at it again at a future date. I traded my rifle with the 270 tube for a used model 700 in 270 & it is shooting quite well.

My 270 is awesome with 130 grain sierra game kings and 53.2 grains of IMR 4350. I use cci primers and it is one ragged hole at 100 yards. I am having troubles with accuracy in the muzzleloader barrel. I am thinking of getting rid of it and getting a sidekick.

Bulzaye, I was hoping for the same with my 270 barrel, but it did not want to play. Accuracy was just unacceptable for an Antelope hunt, about 1.25-1.5" groups when it did it's best. If I thought this was a reflection of CVA rifles in general, I would have traded off my other barrels as well, but I don't see it that way at all. After hunting season & probably after year's end, I will buy a rifle, I hope a heavy
223  tube or a 204 is avail. by then. Then I will have a 308 for medium game & target, a MZ tube & a Varmit as well. We shall see.

Curiously, I had the same misfortune with the first Encore that I tried, but I gave them the same benefit of a doubt.

NoMo I certianly understand. I had an encore 25-06. the key word was had. I could not dial that thing in with anything. So, I sent it down the road quick. I am getting acceptable accuracy with my elite 50 caliber muzzleloader to hunt deer. Just not acceptable for me. I wasnt trying to imply that you had given up on them, I saw just the opposite in your post. I hope it works out for you.

Yes, I did & would have done the same with the 270 tube if I had more time.

and it still wasn't shooting better? seems like that it may be the ammo but it dosen't matter now.

I have had several barrels that didn't give the superfine accuracy I always look for untill I shot them a couple hundred times. My present 7x57 is a good example, average shooter for 300 rounds and picky at that, now it shoots just about any well put together round into less than an inch for 3 shots. I am considering buying an Optima Elite to play with in 308/50 cal mz. Who is best to order from?
