G2 In .45-70, Need Mount Advice
«

I have a nice 14" G2 in .45-70. My 2 ring mounts for my Leopold Scope tends to allow the scope to slowly turn, causing the cross hairs to cant slightly. I believe I've got it down as far as I can go without stripping off the screws or the hex heads! Would a 3 ring mount set cure this problem? If so, any suggestions on make and model?

Are you using a glossy finished scope? I like the Warne Steel rings, the quick release model that has 2 screws on the top and 2 screws on the bottom have never let me down. I have never needed three rings to hold a scope in place with these rings, not even glossy ones.

Yes...it's a glossy scope. About 20 years old.

Yes, 3 or 4 ring mounts are a great help in preventing scope rotation, sliding, and flexing, which is a major cause in scope damage. The T'SOB from SSK can't be beaten.

Yup, I agree with 3 or 4 rings. Also a piece of double sided tape between scope and rings will help. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

I would suggest that if you use Warne Rings, the scope won't do that. I know many people like three rings. I haven't had a problem with Warne rings even on bad kicking stuff.
