suggestions please
« on: August 29, 2007, 03:13:04 AM »
hey everyone.  i have a single shot 30/30 nef for my son.  last year we used a 410/45colt with a red dot scope.  it work well enough for his first times with a scope.  now we are moving to a different platform (30/30).  we well be hunting in the woods.  so 100 yd shots will probably be the maximum distance.  the scope will not get alot of use other than yearly deer hunting.  proper magnification for the required distance, price, reliability, and ease of use our most of my concerns.  thanks to everyone in advance.    mike j.

A fixed 4x from one of the major manufacturers would be my first choice.  Rugged, and inexpensive!

you should look at a variable power 2-7.  I have found this variable to be the best for use on a combination 12/30-06 gun.  When walking and stalking I use the 2x and when sitting for 100-150 yd shots I go up in power.  Closer to sunset I use the 2x which works better low light situations.

You should take a look at the Mueller review posted at the top of this forum.

I would go with a 1.5-4.5 variable. Will do everything you need and "look" right on a .30-30. Might check the auctions for a Swift. I have had good  luck with their scopes.
