stuck 209s
« on: August 29, 2007, 04:42:36 PM »
I took the new sidekick out to the range today. I really liked it for the most part. I had a lot of trouble with the primer carriers. Some of the spent primers would pop right out but I had hell with a lot of them. I took three carriers to the range with me and was able to get off 16 shots before all three carriers were jammed up. One of the carriers was busted on the first shot. The primer expanded and broke the first ring of the carrier. I had to really work on some of them to get the primer out of the carrier. I used Winchester 209 primers,  the package said they were for 209 muzzeloaders. I think these primers were too powerful because some of them were split wide open and jammed in the carrier. Anyone else have problems like this? Is there a lower powered primer out there?

langcjl,

I have had the same thing happen a few years ago with the Winchester primers shooting Black Mag'3 and 460 grain No Excuses, but it was a Lot issue because one box would do it and another just like it wouldn't. I like to shoot heavy conicals, so i bought the .25 ACP plug and those problems all went away. I have been dabbling with another ignition source earlier this week, using the old original Knight D.I.S.C. #11 nipple inserts in the NEF primer carriers. They work well, but I haven't actually tried it with powder yet. Hopefully this weekend if the weather cooperates. It is less messy than the 209's, but nothing compares to the .25 ACP plug.
