thinking of starting into this sport
« on: August 30, 2007, 03:54:01 PM »
I really don't know anyone that is into silhouette shooting.  I have read some info about how you do the matches, but not much about what kind of guns.  what are some of you using and why?  Pics would be neat ;D  I live in Michigan and I am thinking about getting into this type of shooting.  thanks everyone!

Welcome to silhouette.

You can check at www.IHMSA.org and view the video.  They also have contacts for the directors in your area.

Almost any handgun will do for one style or another.  I use a 41mag revolver for field pistol but you can shoot any handgun up to 1.290"case length including 22mag.  I also shoot my encore for big bore.  It's a reduced loaded 308 since during a match you will shoot between 50 or 60 rounds.  Some of the shooters use revolvers to shoot standing but most use contenders, strikers,  or similar styled single shot pistols.

If your range shoots small bore then you can shoot any 22lr pistol.  The targets are smaller and thinner so only 22's are allowed on this course.

At my first shoot, some of the shooters at my range offered to let me shoot their pistols since I had only brought my revolver.  It was like getting together with old freinds.

Good luck in your search.

There are several clubs in MI.  When you are at www.ihmsa.orgcheck out the match schedule.  The clubs are listed by state.  The MI folks are excellent people and will certainly help you get started.

The best gun to shoot is the one you already own. Take in a few matches, and see what is competitive. If you're interested in a particular gun, chances are excellent that someone has one you can shoot. Since a big part of the sport has to do with equipment, we do lots of customizing, and most guys are proud to let you try their rigs. IHMSA is definately the friendliest shooting sport I have ever tried. Welcome to the family!!!

In the videos, the long range bolt actions are nice.  Since I shoot Hunters Pistol Limited (100 meters), I'm actually using a scoped Thompson Center Contender- www.tcarms.com .  That isn't to say I've never shot others either.  Even the Ruger MKII in .22 long rifle makes it to the range once in a while.

When starting and completing a project, here's something to remember;"I can't" really means "I won't"!
