puma lever
« on: August 31, 2007, 04:13:47 AM »
Hi folks.  I have been following this site for quite a while and this will be my first topic so please bear with me.

I have one of the Puma .357 mag rifles with the 16 inch barrel which I really love except for two things.  My old
eyes have a real problem with the sights late in the afternoon which prevents me from hunting with it.  I would
really like to take a whitetail with it.  The other thing that I am not happy with is that it has the large loop
lever.  I would really prefer the standard lever.

Anything anyone can tell me that can help me correct the above including sources for the necessary parts
will be appreciated.

The best thing to do I think is to trade it for a Marlin. The Marlin will fix the overly large loop problem and allow easy scope mounting. I have a rifle similar to yours but with standard loop and 20" round barrel but the Rossi's are an iron sight only kinda deal as scoping them really just isn't in the cards. You might fix the problem with fiber optic sights but I can't say where you'd get them. Now a replacement loop shouldn't be that hard. Brownells would be my recommended starting place or maybe contact Rossi aka Taurus or the importer LSI or EMF to see if they will sell you one.

Last Sunday Big 5 had Marlins on sale for $ 339.00 + tax .  Bought a .45 LC Marlin .  To add to my collection of lever action rifles .

Do you reload ?  If not , I would suggest .44 Mag , even though the little rifle has a fair amount of recoil .  Get a slip on recoil pad .

If you reload , a stout .45 LC should work for a brush gun .

Or , for more $$$ , step up to a Marlin .45-70 .  All the power you need for North America .

Or , think about a peep sight for the Puma ?

Thanks guys but I am not interested in trading my Puma.   Nothing against Marlins, I have several.
I wanted a model 92 winchester for 40 years but never was able to get one.  Just too much Roy Rogers,
Gene Autry etc. back then gave me the desire for that style I guess.

I guess I will have to stick to one of my other rifles for hunting and save my Puma for plinking.

A simple peep sight should work fine.

If it's a newer Rossi, contact Rossi for the regular lever you want.

I traded off my old .357 Puma and I've been kicking myself ever since.  It wouldn't shoot .38 Specials, and that's why I traded it.

I do reload.  I tried everything to get it to feed .38 Specials and it wouldn't.  I did shoot a lot of light loaded  .357 rounds in it, but they wouldn't fit in my .38 Special pistols.

Did you try using .38 Special brass and loading the OAL to .357 Mag OAL ?

Although this might or might not chamber in .38 Special revolvers ?  I do not know , I do not own a .38 Special  .

I have loaded .357 Mag brass light , to about .38 Special velocity for a revolver .  And since I do not own a .38 Special , I have loaded .38 Special brass hot , to fire in the .357 Mag .

God bless
