Belted case chambering ??????
« on: August 31, 2007, 05:05:12 AM »
I know belted cases are going by the wayside but it would seem that they are perfect for the single shot rifle market as they headspace off the belt. Does anyone know of a belted case being chambered in a H&R. I know the magnum pressures would be too high but they could be loaded to a safe level. Is it doable????

The 450 marlin is a chambering for handi and its belted.

In general, YES it is.
But the Handi is not the platform for this. It doesn't do well with higher pressures generated by many of these calibers.

There is one belted cartridge chambered in the handi and that's the 450 MARLIN.

The handi will and does handle the 30-06 class of cartridges, but to my mind is still best suited to the older rimmed versions of cartridges.

Belted cases aren't really suited for accuracy..It is only after they are fired and reloaded so they head space on the shoulder that they come into their own...With the exception of a rimmed straight walled case...this is normally the "case" provided the rifle has the proper head space to begin with...

CW...if you ever got to shoot mine...you would see just how suited they are to the rimless cartridges too... ;) It's all in the chambering and how it's loaded that makes them what they are...

As soon as I posted that rimmed case statement, I knew someone would call me on it. ::) ;D

I have a number of rimless handis and they can and do shoot extremely well.
Its just when you think on it, 90% of the problems with Handies come from rimless rounds. The rimmed cases are just a natural for a break open firearm.
Just as Rimless is for a bolt, or semi auto. Any of these that have been converted to fire a rimmed round are frought with problems. The 45-70  Siamese Mauser and SMLE bolts as well as the COONAN semi auto pistol come to mind. They can be made to work, but have been abandoned because of "issues" with the design. Its just not rimmed friendly.

Dosent make it bad or take anything away from the guns. its just the way it is. IMHO at least...

Something else to ponder... Why there aren't any rimless shotgun shells?  I say because the shotgun made its debut in a SS or SxS design....and the rimmed shell was best suited. Even the old european stopping rounds...many have a rimmed counterpart. Because they are better suited for the SxS rifles they are shot in. ;)

I'm not really calling you out on it CW...I just mean when the rifle/cartridge combination is "balanced" as mine are...they shoot exceptionally well with out issues...Oh...BTW...my 338-06 A-Square is an ejector barrel...not rimmed...and to date I have had 2 FTF because of my own doing...Now...

As to speaking of the great old SxS DG guns...the reason they have that big honking rim is because they made them that way for their extractors..same for the shotguns...It doesn't mean they can't do a rimmless SxS in a DG...because they do...Take a Look at the ones being produced in this century...http://www.hollandandholland.com/gunrooms/london/bespoke_weapons/the_royal_double_rifle/...

Also...even though 90% of the trouble come on the rimmless round...doesn't mean anything really...other than they screwed up royally on these rounds and on purpose too I might add...with their under powered ejector springs and their rough and out of spec'd chambers...When everything is with in proper specs...and assembled properly with the correct parts the Handi works exceptionally well..without failure....rim or rimless...

I don't disagree with you that they are indeed set up for rimmed cartridges...because they are...only that if they are done correctly...they are set up for rimless equally as well...and will function with failure...unless of course it is the nut behind the gun that causes it...

I would suspect that 90% of the handis are rimless.
So 90% of the problems is only fair.

How is calling it fair...fair...?
There is no failure to eject issue now on the extractor barrels...and even the 45-70 had issues with weak springs in the ejectors...ALL of the Handi's had weaker springs installed in the last 2 years of the ejectors...Chambering issues are just that...That has nothing to do with the rim of the cartridges...and what is the best chambering...rim or rimless...Now...with the extractor...it doesn't matter...both are well suited...Granted if you got a weak spring behind the ejector...a weak lifter spring as well..add a out of spec'd chamber or a rough chamber...instant presto...you have a stuck case...This used to be a major problem...Mis aligned over sized chambers are getting rarer...but...they still have a long way to go in their consistency...it seems they get a bad batch and don't catch it soon enough and they get shipped...not only in rimless cartridges...but in the rimmed ones too...
