Good luck Redhawk1.

October 1st here ... still in the 90s and deer are living high on the hoof with beans and corn not yet harvested and not a lot of sign in the woods as yet. I have put a couple of trail cams out and probably go out and check them today sometime.

Just got back from the morning hunt, I saw a doe and fawn at about 50 yards. It was a cool 60 degrees and a lot of sunshine. Just beautiful.  Come back home to get my shotgun to go out and get the season opener for Dove's at noon and then back to my stand for the afternoon deer hunt. Boy life is good when hunting season opens back up.  ;D ;)

Son and I went for elk this morning.  It was about 45 deg, some mist, wet grass, and still some smoke from the forest fires.  My son was doing the calling, and I was the designated shooter.  I was about 75 yards in front of him.   We run a sequence that entails cow talk, sleezy cow, and lone bugle -- repeat every five minutes for about an hour.  On the third sequence, I heard a lone cow call from about 40 yards in front of me.  She slowly moved in until I could see her broadside behind some small pines at about 10 yards.  I didn't have real good cover, and she must have noticed me -- she stopped, and pointed her nose right at me and raised her chin slightly.  You could see her nose working for about 20 seconds -- she didn't appear to like my sihloute (sp?), turned, and trotted off.  About a minute later, a spike bull showed up at about 15 yards (can't shoot spikes in the area we hunt).  He caught my image straight off -- you could almost see his eyeballs pop out of his head as he turned and trotted off (he was too inexperienced to be real scared).  A couple of minutes later, as I was trying to be stealthy while changing positions, I heard another elk trot off -- never saw that one, but it couldn't have been more than 20 yards from me.

After an hour, my son worked his way thru the timber, and had a cow elk about run him down.  It happend so fast,  he said he had the bow at full draw, and was waiting to see if it was a bull when she stopped broadside about 15 yards from him -- too early to shoot a cow -- still six weeks of archery season remaining.

Great day.

Hunting was a blast today, I seen a doe and a fawn this morning, I went dove hunting this
afternoon and got 5 doves. We went back out deer hunting at 4 PM. I got in my stand by 4:30 PM
at 6:30 I had a fawn come to where my stand was, it was about 25 yards from my stand and then
another fawn came in but stayed out at about 45 to 50 yards. Then I seen a nice big doe coming in
also. I waited for the doe and it just took it’s time coming in. She was not sure if she wanted to
cross my area to get to the open field and milled around behind some trees behind my stand for
about 15 more minuets. At 7:00 PM she stepped out from behind the trees and I was able to make
a shot on her. I saw her do a mule kick and knew I made a good hit. I watched her run into the
heavy woods and I heard her crash. I waited 15 minuets and got down from my tree stand and
found a good blood trail, but I did not find my arrow. I tracked her about 50 yards and there she
was. She dressed out at 78 pounds, we weighed here at the butcher shop. Nice doe..  ;D

Congrats Redhawk1 ... looks like deer on the bbq at Redhawk1's this weekend ... byo beer and chair.

Never been dove hunting. One of those things on my to do list one day. As I get older it seems the perfect way to hunt though. A large field, a 12 gauge, a cooler of beer and a deck chair :)

As soon as the meat comes back from the butcher, it is deer burgers and tenderloins on the grill.  ;)
