New 308 Ultra
« on: September 01, 2007, 04:29:42 PM »
;D ;D I am back in the Handi business again. I traded a CVA Optima Pro straight up for a new Ultra this afternoon. I topped it with extra high Weaver rings and set a Trophy 3-x40 on top. I haven't even purchased a box of ammo for it yet. What do you suggest a good starting point for ammo. I was thing of Federal Blue Box 150 sp and see where things go from there. Next it will be Ultra Comp 270. Then the 25-06, 243 and 223 and itf they ever produce a Swede I'll be first in line....Feels good to own a rifle i was stupid enough to sell.   Jess ;) ;)

;D Took the rifle to the range today. Had 150gr Federal Blue box and 150gr Eagle fmj's. 5 rounds to get it on paper and 5 3 shots 100 yard groups and 1 200 3 shot group. 100 yard groups average 1 1/4-2 inches and lone 200 yard group around the 3 inch mark. I realized why I like these little rifle so much. I see a 270 next and an Ultra 25-06 after that. Wish I never sold that first 25 I had. Live and learn I guess. Hope to get better groups with some tinkering.  Jess

This has very little to do with my new 308 . It's a good Bye and good luck post. i think my welcome got worn out and it's time to let the experts here discuss what they love to discuss and part company by saying it has been enjoyable and good luck and God Bless to all.   Jess

Jess, think about it. No one responded in 2 hours and it was pretty late at that. Most of us old codgers are either nodding off in front of the TV or already between the sheets by then.

I know its hard when your excitement just bounces off the wall but it happens. We'll catch up. Lee

hey pard
i had a survivor that REALLY liked factory remington core-loks in 150 grain
would shoot sub moa at 200 yards all day long
bought it off a pard on here and slapped a 25 dollar used simmons scope on it, sighted it in at 25 yards with four shots
the next shot was made opening morning deer season when i dropped a nice little six point at 215 yards
hit him right on the money
hate now that i let that shooter slip away
am wanting another

Hey Jess, don't worry buddy, were all in the same "old" boat together. Your still welcomed at my campfire and my camp anytime, the sooner the better (were both "old" remember). Keep that info on the .308 coming buddy, I have a 25-06 barrel I have never shot and I just purchased a used 25-06 Handi Ultra and need to shoot it as soon as I pick it up, yours was a great post(s) and got me thinking about my newest acquisition. Stay here buddy, we are all in this together....<><....:)

Jess, no need to go anywhere, we're all one big (old!!)family here, if you want bounce stuff of of us, feel free, that's what we're all about, sharing!!

As I stated in another 308 thread, I haven't used any factory ammo in my 308, but Mac shot Federal Match 168gr in his that shot ½moa, in fact he won a postal match with it if I remember correctly!! ;)

take care,

Tim

It came in a close second actually...but...my neighbor who bought it from me uses 150 grain Winchester power points which actually shoot better than the Federal Match ammo...There are a few types of factory ammo I suggest...The 3 weights of Federal Fusion ammo for starters...The fusions usually shoot real good...

150 grainers...http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=526797&t=11082005
165 grainers...http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=477666&t=11082005
180 grainers...http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=877399&t=11082005

150 grain Partition load..http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=792357&t=11082005

In the Winchester line...

150 grainers..http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=155798&t=11082005
150 grainers..http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=515658&t=11082005
168 grainer...http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=524302&t=11082005

It's expensive...I know...but..there are other places you can get it on-line if you want...that may be a little cheaper...or you can reload for it as well...
