load for 45-75wcf?
« on: September 02, 2007, 01:00:11 PM »
I'm thinking of getting a 76 uberti or chaperal winchester in 45-75.  Any good black powder load data?  this would be primarily used for hunting and plinking.  I'd like to use as heavy a bullet at posible, preferably a big lube bullet.

Thanks

As much powder that fills the case, when dropped from a 24" drop tube and allows for a lubed wad and bullet to be seated.

Black Powder or Black Powder Sub. ONLY - DO NOT try this with Smokeless Powder .

BLACK POWDER please....

Try this with BULLSEYE and you'll be meeting St. Peter a little ahead of schedule!!!

The 45-75 winchester is a bottle necked case. 350 grain bullets (lyman 456192) and 24 grains of 4198 should give you about 1380 fps . A factory load was given 1383 fps. I read some where that the candian Mounties used the 45-75 for some years.

I'm actualy considering the RCMP 76 rifle/carbine, and as far as I know it only comes in 45-75.  1300+ fps on a 350 grain bullet would make a very good mid game rifle.  Though I imagine deer would be about all I'd take around here with it.

Thanks

I found this:

.45-75 Winchester

The .45-75 Winchester was introduced with the Model 1876 lever action repeating rifle. This was an enlarged version of the famous Model 1873 action designed for use with cartridges up to 2.25" in length.

The .45-75 Win. used a rimmed bottleneck case that was shorter and fatter than the .45-70 Government. It measured .559" in diameter at its base, .547" at the shoulder, and .478" at its neck. Case length was 1.89" and overall cartridge length was 2.25".

The action of the Winchester 1876 rifle was not particularly strong, so the .45-75 was factory loaded with a 350 grain bullet at a MV of 1383 fps and ME of 1485 ft. lbs. This was ballistically inferior to the .45-70-405 and .45-70-500 as a buffalo cartridge, but its lever action rifle allowed much faster repeat shots. Teddy Roosevelt is said to have favored the .45-75 Winchester as a grizzly bear cartridge.

Thanks guys, an interesting read.  I can't get on very many gun sites though.  I'm on an oil rig at the moment and they've got just about everything filtered, got to protect our inocent minds you know. >:(
