What is your jewelry count?
« on: September 03, 2007, 11:00:45 AM »
Something a little different:

I have been hunting waterfowl since the early 80's and have had a lot of good memories.  However, nothing tops getting bands.

Over the years I have only harvested three banded birds.  A mallard drake in the early 90's and two geese last year.

I passed up a shot about three years ago on a green head to let my dad get him and low and behold it was banded.

Question, how many bands have you been lucky enough to get and what kind of birds?

I read some where that collars are starting to be made in black instead of the old white ones.  Too many hunters were picking out the geese with the collars and thus skewing the results.

I've got 3 banded honkers and 2 or 3 banded ducks.  Two years ago I missed a bull spring at 20 yards 3x that my dad dropped which was banded.  Then later in the day a pair of mallards came in and I took the hen on my side and he got the drake.  The drake was double banded including a $100 band.  I'll never live that day down.

I've taken 2 banded ducks, one mallard, and one wood duck.

Just shot the woody a few days ago and it was banded 8/21/2002

I thought when I pulled it from the water that it had been banded for a while.  The band was polished and pretty smooth with no sharp edges.

The mallard was only banded for a year and had sharp edges around the numbers.

I've been hunting ducks since 1990.

Add one to the list.  I shot my first banded Speck this week.  In fact we hadn't even shot a Speck in a couple of years.

Three came in and I picked out the closest, lucky draw.  Too bad the limit is only one.

Shot some snows two weeks ago, Eastern Shore of MD at the home farm. Got my first neck collar.

Had a good year with ducks. Only one band, a black duck that was banded in Nova Scotia.
Here are a few Mallards from a good mornings shoot.

JoMiBru, that's a nice  bunch of birds you got there. The goose collar is nice, did you check to see where and when it was tagged? I find it pretty cool to see how far  they have gone.

Sorry about the barrel thing, but GB has its rules.I have to follow them as best I can.

Thirty Eight years hunting waterfowl, hundreds of ducks couple dozen geese. Only twice have I shot banded birds. One was back in the early 80's the other was a goose two falls ago.
My son has shot two ducks now with bands so he is off to a better start. When I see these guys with a whole string of bands on their call lanyard. I have to wonder if their just hunting where there are lots of birds with bands? or buying them on e-bay?

I tend to agree with you macthedriver...sometimes I wonder. I have duck hunted for thirty two years now. I hunt in an area were we kill alot of duck..I mean alot I have no doubt that I have killed hundreds of ducks and have only killed 7 greenheads with bands (thats all I will shoot). I have killed tons of canadians and have killed ony one banded one..16 pounder tho. Some people I know are just lucky to..My brothers first 3 canadian kills were banded. All different hunts to. He's also killed a greenhead that was nine years old. My oldest was 4. (http://www.myspace.com/nomercyhuntingclub)

just alittle bit above average day. Cold cold that morning.

38 years and 24 bands.  Mallards ,woodies, widgeons. blacks. 1 can and 1 bluebill and 1pintail.  Pamlico Sound in NC has its advantages.  Not counting the local bands from releases.
