feral swine
« on: September 04, 2007, 02:43:34 PM »
Does anyone know anything about where the feral hogs might be? I've heard that they've been seen in bay, gladwin, arenac and isabella counties. The DNR wants sportsman/woman to shoot them when we see them, but they also seem reluctant to tell us where they have spotted them.
Any help would be appreciated.  ???

Hey thanks John,ya thats what they say where they are, but, I personally know DNR officers who basically refuse to say or just won't let you know where they have seen them.....it's weird...... :-\

Great, my place is of old 76 just south of Roscommon. So maybe I'll see one during deer season

Nobody I know has seen any  around the saginaw area. I have heard of some by midland but never seen any myself. I'm in the saginaw /bay area. I did a lot of scouting during the deer season, and didn't even see a track.
I would like to see some though...... ;)

Lived in MI all of my life[38 years] been hunting since I was 14 and didn't have a clue that there are feral hogs out there. What did they do get loose from Nugent's property?   :D

From what I understand they got loose from a ranch near Midland. I think it was around 1999 or 2000. It seems there were some 40 hogs got loose, and expanded their territory from there. Now I'm not real sure about this so if anyone could help with better details, please do so.  ???

Well Gooser I'm glad to hear that they haven't always been here. I really thought I was missing something. Do you know if it is legal to shoot them? Maybe considered to be like a varment and you just need a small game liscense?

There is kind of a problem with hunting feral hogs in Michigan. Other than deer hunting season if your roaming the woods with a high powered firearm being confronted by a DNR officer is going to get you a ticket for hunting deer out of season. You can say youre hunting Coyotes but its up to the DNR officer to decide, not you. The Michigan DNR wants them eliminated but doesnt want you running around the woods with a high powered firearm outside of that season because they feel that puts poachers in the woods. I know a few low life's and that is all the excuse they would need. There is an excellent forum in the michigansportsmenforums on this issue. I used to work for a cable communications company and Ive seen them in my travels to different jobs in southwest saginaw county, midland county and alot of times near some friends places in Ogemaw county which is where ive seen them the most  Ill post the link for the michigansportsmenforums if anyone is interested

Yes,the DNR does want them eliminated, and just a valid small game license is needed. However, read the response of Leesecw he has some good advice there regarding the DNR.
Yes, I would like to check out that site.

Hopefully I posted the link right. Ive seen feral hogs in a number of counties when I was working my old job. I had alot of windshield time. My friend up in Ogemaw county that sees them regularly says the landowners have resorted to some sort of a pen trap.  I dont know how one of those would work on public property though. During deer season 2007 I had some feral hog meat trapped from a group of from 7 squealers of about 45 pounds each. Good eating but alot of fat in the meat. They would definetely make some good sausage. They do some terrible damage to the ground. They vacuum up acorns like its going out of style, robbing the deer out of winter food. The pen trapping was resorted to after some encounters with the DNR while carrying a high powered rifle in the woods while looking for hogs. One of the guys up there was carrying a 7 millimeter mag with a legal smallgame license  outside of Deer season and had a bad day with the DNR. I can see shooting the young squealers with a 22 mag but dealing with a 500 pound plus enraged momma pig afterwards with just a 22 mag I dont think I would particularly like

Also if you go to that link, you need to create a screen name and a password to be able to use the search function. I find the right forum by typing the name feral in the search. Its run by a lady by the name of kirstie. Nice to see the ladies in the woods!
