Elmer gun kills!
« on: September 05, 2007, 12:36:18 AM »
had a buddy that called the other day to say we could come out and shoot a couple small pigs. Got to his place and he said he needed two buffalo shot for a banquette and asked if we would oblige. First one dropped to my 475 marlin lever gun with a head shot. Second one fell to my buddys 45-65 lever gun. Dropped again with a head shot. Chased around all day trying to find those small hogs and all we found were big ones and he didnt want them shot. Had to bring some meat home so decided to shoot a buffalo for myself. Problem was i went there to shoot hogs and didnt have a handgun load for something that big. Figured what the hell i wanted to try that devestator hp on something anyway. Had them loaded in the 4 5/8s super with the scrimshawed grips at about 1200 fps. Took a 700 lb cow behind the front shoulder at about 50 yards. Buffalo ran at the shot like it wasnt hit and made about 50 yards and started to stagger. I wasnt shocked as thats there usually reaction to even a 500 linebaugh. When we gutted it out we found the bullet took off the pipes running into the top of the heart and it was completely bled out. What was surprising to me is that cast hp gave complete penetration on an animal that size and it had about a inch and a half exit wound. Im here to tell you i was impressed. I about know that theres not a jacketed hp bullet made that would have shot through an animal that big!! Elmer would have been proud of his 44mag!!

Good job Lloyd!  And I'm glad you got to do it with your 'Elmer' gun!  Yeah, cast bullets are all we really ever need.  Jacketed bullets seem to be just something we play with once in a while before we come back to cast again.  I just got my Uberti back.  Was a 7 1/2" .357 but now it's a .44 spl 4 3/4".  I spent the holiday getting the POA/POI together for my favorite loads.  Glad you got to use that new gun and have meat for the winter!  44 Man

That's why I just run one load in my handguns! Of course I just really need to settle on what that one load will be from the 15 loads I am testing right now for my 45 Colt Bisley Vaquero! Actually I have it down to 3 loads now and just need to decide what is the best shooter of the bunch! 335gr LFNGC at 1050fps is just the ticket for the sights and they are all pretty accurate!

Keith was so far ahead of his time that 25 years after his death we are just really beginning to understand how good he really was! He was not always right but he was seldom wrong.

I really need a friendly rancher that needs a buffalo killed for the BBQ!

Lloyd you have some good friends I tell yea!

If you can't share the steaks, you should at least show pictures of the steaks (while still intact in buffalo form).  You took photos didn't you!!

Lloyd

Just wondering.  Tell me more about your devestator as cast.  Alloy? Treated?
