Rifle stock mounted Spotting Scope ...!
« on: September 05, 2007, 03:48:20 PM »
I usually carry my 10x50 binoculars for viewing game etc whilst ‘walkabout’ hunting with my 10x42 scoped Browning B78 High Wall. However, I often feel the need for an even closer view – particularly when scanning over longer distances. Having recently bought a rather compact Japanese made WEAVER 20 x 50mm spotting scope for usage when testing my .243 hand loads down at the local rifle range, I figured that, rather than carrying it about in the bush mounted on a fiddly ‘camera’ tripod in a small back pack, it would be more practical to simply attach it to a slightly modified /shortened old rifle stock – complete with a sling and the option of it being carried in the back pack. Very simple and effective – ‘aim and view’ as though it was a rifle.

Game wardens do that around here. Only they use cameras with big zooms for evidence.   KN

There is a commercial synthetic version of that concept - I think it is called "scope stock", or something similar.  I ordered one about a year or two ago, but I just couldn't shoulder it with my spotting scope attached, in a position where it was comfortable or usable at all.  My scope has the ocular and objectives lenses offset and my neck just isn't made of rubber. I sent it back (I believe Cabelas).  I then tried an old 10/22 stock and figured out how to do some sawing and gluing to make a mounting plate and mount my scope.  Like many things, it is an unfinished project, but when I get it done it will work better than the commercial model.  Seems like I also saw one mentioned on Boyd's website, can't recall for sure.
The first one I bought had a warning included about being careful where you use it - someone might think it's a rifle.  I suppose that could happen, especially in or near a city.

Years ago I got a Ramline synthetic stock for a Marlin Camp Carbine.    When I sold the carbine I got the bright idea to mount a Leupold 25X spotting scope on the Ramline stock.  A screw from the hardware store went through the existing stock hole into the scope base -- and positioned the scope perfectly.  Then I attached a folding bipod and sling.  Works perfect!  And, it's the most borrowed piece of shooting equipment I own.
