I love casting and shooting lead bullets in my lever guns and have been sizing and putting on gas checks with Lee sizers and liquid alox lube,but the "dirty "bullets and the bug to move up to "better" has bitten me.Tell me for putting on gas checks and working with the machine which is the way to go Star or rcbs?

I bought an RCBS, but wonder sometimes if I would have been better served with a Saeco.

I started with Lee push through sizers, then bought an RCBS, finally bought a Star. I wish I would have started with the Star. It is so easy to use, incredibly fast, and a real pleasure to work with. I size and lube mostly pistol bullets, but have found the Star works very well to crimp on gas checks on my RCBS 200 grain bullets for the 35 Whelen. Bevel base bullets are no problem on the Star.

Buy an original San Diego Star if you can find one on Ebay. Otherwise buy the Magma Star from Magma Engineering. Star sizing dies show up on Ebay fairly frequently for about $18 to $35. Stillwell Tool and Die in Texas can hone them to a larger size (They can be increased as much as 25 thousands of an inch).

BTW, In my opinion, you should use soft lubes for which the Star was originally designed for. Avoid the heaters with hard lube. You may have to put a light bulb next to the Star if the air temperature is below 60 degrees. Pretty much the same as with RCBS or Lyman regarding temperture.

I have 2 stars and they will be buried with me along with a particularly accurate VVCG contender barrel. If you buy the Saeco, RCBS, or Lyman, you will later get another case of "move up to better" later on. They are all good tools with the best listed first and the lessers after, but...Buy the Star now and save yourself a step in that process.
