 I ordered one too.

Slightly different than the one above though - History has shown us that some dictators had "bigger balls" than others. I certainly wouldn't want to limit any dictator of mine to such smallish, dimpled and pale balls...

On mine it appears to be just flat black spray paint.

It seems every second thread is about mortars and this has really peaked my interest. I can't compete with my little 1inch bore Yorktown. I think an upgrade's on my wish list as well!

Why not?  We might-could bend the rules a little and make an exception!

But golf-ball mortars are the rage of the moment around here.  It flows from one to another to another ....

Or on the other hand, you could CHALLANGE others to a 1" bore mortar contest!

Hmmmmm.  How about a 1" bore Mortar MAKING contest?

Post some pictures of it just to throw down the gauntlet!

On the drawing board right now, I have a companion mortar to my quarter-scale 12 pounder cannon. It would be bored to use the same 1.125" lead balls that I cast for the Napoleon. It would be very close competition to a 1" bore. I've been playing around with this design for awhile, but it hasn't been a high priority.

If a little leeway was given in the bore dimensions, I might be willing to put this project on the front burner for another contest.

Hmmmm.

Traditinoally we have had  only four rules here on this board.

Safety.
Legal
Fun
Civil behavior/language

SO, within that SPIRIT, I think WE are flexible to allow variation in bore size.

I had just glanced at this thread.  I don't have a golf ball mortar and it took me a while to figure out that's what GB referred to. I do have a 1" bore Dictator that my wife bought for me at the CW show in Savannah 8-10 years ago.  I did not know she bought it as I was distracted talking to Dr Lord.  I had not seen him in several years and he was always fascinating to talk to.  I have never shot it but it does look safe, actually very safe.  One pinball came with it so I will have to make some ammo.  I can't find the projectile. The guy that made it did a good job.  I don't remember his name.  It might have been one of you guys. If it was please claim your work.

DD - Forgive me since it's really none of my biz (As I won't be competing in "Walk the Walk"), but shooting lead or steel balls gives (In my humble and unsolicited opinion) an unfair advantage over shooting golf balls. Golf balls tend to bounce, non-bouncy lead or steel tends to stay planted where it lands.

You might consider creating a different Walk the Walk category for "OTGB" (Other Than Golf Ball).

I realize it's all in fun, but I've seen some folks get all bent out of shape (Justifiably at times) at Pinewood Derby races where officials made the slightest changes to the rules after cars had been made or racing had begun.

 I'll go away now...

Victor3,

Good points when dealing with formal competitions.  This isn't competition this fun shooting.    This is to get people out shooting their mortars and learning more about them.  Every one wins and the prize is the knowledge gained.

Right now I think a bunch of guys are rethinking how they built their mortar and and how to shoot their mortar.

Did you notice some guys reporting irratic ignition?  Using the wrong size powder? Powder chamber to large?  Need  and over powder wad?  Different fusing?

How about not hitting any where near the pin? Too much/little powder?  Don't know how to point a mortar?  Gof ball makes crummy a projectile?

All part of the learning curve.

I have considered more formalized Golf Ball mortar matches. But later.     One step at a time.

Right now , were having fun here.

 10-4 DD...

Hope to enter future shoots myself. I'm taking notes!

I'm glad that stuff isn't so regulated that the "fun" aspect is taken away. I didn't know how it goes here. That's refreshing to me - Maybe I've been subject to too many formal competitions and the associated BS that makes it not so much fun anymore.

Look out though - I'm mounting a laser sight on my cannon...

DD I too wasn't expecting the answer I got from Cat. I wanted to hear "it has to be gb bored" giving me no other choice but to make a new purchase! When comparing Dominic's work to others on the net, I can't get over how affordable his pricing is! As soon as I scrounge up the funds, you will hear from me Dominic!

...

With the light weight of the golf ball, VERY small differences in a number of variables make LARGE differences in velocity.
As you said, part of the learning curve.
