Catkiller,

Did you buy it new? If so go to the shop you bought it at and see if they can pull the yellow sheet for you. Just explain to them what is going on.

I bought it from wal-mart about 3 years ago and they have switched stores and stopped selling guns and sent everything to the atf and getting any info from them is like pulling teeth. The gun is registered to me and i thought it would be as simple as taking the serial number to the police department and they could see if it was registered to me . I have spent all day on the phone and still have nothing

Are there ANY INPERFECTIONS on the gun that would be known only to you? Before serial# keeping got popular, I have taken reports on stolen guns that the owner had had for years and NEVER knew the serial # but, he could describe EVERY scratch and where it came from. This has identified a lot of guns and other items over the years.

Wouldn't Wally World be responsible for keeping the records of the transactions?

The cop at the police dept. told me i would have to get proof from ware i purchased the gun but why do they make us pay to register guns if they are unable to check and see who they are registered to.

Once a gun dealer goes out of business, he is required to box up his records and send them to the ATF. I sent mine in years ago. That should make everyone feel better.

I would think that the local law enforcement agency should be able to track the firearm with the serial number, whether they're willing to expend the resources to do that is another matter, if it was a homicide investigation they would, but not likely for a theft. :'(

Gun Tracing

ATF established NTC to trace firearms used in crimes and recovered at crime scenes.1 Crime gun tracing is the "systematic tracking of firearms from manufacturer to purchaser for the purpose of aiding law enforcement officials in identifying suspects involved in criminal violations, establishing stolen status, and proving ownership."2 The volume and efficiency of NTC trace operations have significantly increased since 1993, when it responded to 55,000 requests for traces with a response time of 13 days. During 1996, NTC responded to 133,000 trace requests in an average response time of 9 days. In 1997, NTC traced 194,000 crime guns.3

To initiate a trace on a gun used in a crime, the requesting agency, typically a local police department, furnishes firearm, possession, and incident description information to NTC. Firearms without at least a partial serial number cannot be traced, although ATF and many police laboratories have the capacity to restore obliterated serial numbers. NTC communicates the trace request to the gun manufacturer, who is required to provide the name of the wholesale/retail distributor and the date of transfer. The chain of wholesale/retail transactions is then followed to the extent possible from point of sale to the first retail purchaser. Further investigative tracing of crime guns is at the discretion of NTC and dependent on the significance of the individual investigation and the availability of special agent resources.

Two functions of gun tracing

Firearm tracing serves two primary functions. First, tracing enables law enforcement officials to reconstruct the history of a firearm associated with a crime. This traditional, incident-driven trace may lead to the apprehension of suspects, the identification of potential witnesses, and the discovery of other persons who may be associated with the crime under investigation. The trace may also reveal evidence for other cases and disclose crimes that previously had been undetected.

A 1998 amendment to 18 U.S.C. § 923(d)(1) requires Federal firearms licensees to make trigger locks or lock boxes available for sale on their premises. Failure to comply can result in revocation of the dealer's license (see 144 Cong. Rec. H1104403; 1998 WL732765).

The second emerging function of firearm tracing is the identification of patterns of illegal gun trafficking. Gun tracing can facilitate development of predictive indicators for trafficking schemes at an early stage in their life cycles. For example, patterns of partially or completely obliterated serial numbers of firearms, multiple sales of firearms to purchasers and subsequent short time to crime, patterns of thefts from Federal firearm licensees (FFL's), and multiple traces to the same FFL's or purchaser are highly significant predictors of gun-related crime. By examining patterns in aggregates of traces, gun tracing can help identify opportunities for intervention on the supply side of illegal firearm markets. Such intervention can then reduce further trafficking and associated violent crime. Already, ATF's Project LEAD, an automated data system that tracks illegal firearms, is identifying recurring patterns of illegal firearm suppliers both in the United States and across international borders and providing evidence for prosecution.

There is no Gun Registration in TN.... so it will not be Registered to you ...  The Yellow form will be in your name, but thats all. The Dealer with the Gun may be able to contact ATF and run a check on previous owners since the Wal-Mart forms were turned over, but without Financial incentive, he probably will not want to. He stands to Lose if it's found to be stolen.

Did you file a Police Report at the time it was Stolen ? if not, you will have a hard time recovering it anyway. Good luck tho. ~Ace~

so there wasn't anything else that could identify the gun like pictures of it showing something specific to the gun? next time record all the serial codes and take a piece of paper write your name, address and phone # and stick it in the stock and tape it to the inside. so if its stolen then you can prove it. also take pictures of it all. and try to get a gunsafe

Its amazing how the ATF can track a firearm that was used in a murder but not if it was stolen.   I don't think they realize some murders can be prevented if the firearms thieves are sent to jail.

GOOD LUCK ! , i had a bunch of power tools stolen off one of my trucks !
A friend spotted them in a pawn shop with our metal ID tags on them , I went to the shop , called and met the police there ! I was informed that we would need to let the police in the jurisdiction where they were stolen know the date , time of day and where they were stolen from ! if it was not the city of Richmond they could not help , and if i couldn't furnish the above they wouldn't help ! and if they were me they would forget it !!
no its been 6 years and i still don't have them back ! now they do the theft report over the phone !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

no i think even if walmart had it and gave it to the police the police would be more intersted in speeding tickets. i know a bunch of punks were shooting .22's at the interstate and i called the cops and they came after 2 hours and the punks who i know said they were just walking and popping fireworks while one had a hand full of .22 shorts. the cop said it must have been someone out squirrel hunting or a tire blowing out. its stupid. ohh yeah they were on my brothers land that runs next to the interstate

the police are overwhelmed , around here we seem to get a drive by shooting weekly , seems the rifle is the weapon of choice . Many unsuspecting people get shot when bullets go into homes . no one sees who shot or at best only a car or truck ! hard to look when you are ducking !
This type of crime will stop when the people demand and use the power to stop it ! if all the people on a street opened fire on a car doing a drive by bet they would think twice before doing it again ! that is if they lived ! yep you are correct some good folks would get hurt , but they are getting hurt now anyway !

nothing is going to stop people who are stupider than dogs and act like primates. you can only  install fear in them to get it to slow down. i know a few years back sc had a bunch of home invasions and the attorney general said there was ''open season'' on these people. he let us shoot them no matter what. one broke in my house i shot at his feet and he came with a new bike and left without it. poor dude he left poorer than he came. i didn't try to hit him though

All of us have computers.  Most of us have digital cameras.  I have been making a chart of all the guns I have.  Description, serial number, purchase date and price, and a picture of the serial number of each.

I am sure that someone will say that is not good information to keep, but if I get robbed, I'll have something.
