Rem 870 Quality
« on: September 07, 2007, 12:21:50 AM »
I have been shooting 870's since '67 and the bulk of my hunting and shooting since '74 has been with my 20ga Skeet gun.  In 2005 I decided to buy a new LW20ga 870 and I wish I never had.  Today I will be returning the gun to Ilion for the fourth time to try and get the same problem resolved.  I found that the for-end rubs against the barrel on the left side and takes the blue off.  The first two times they worked on it they took wood out of the fore-end and it still did it.  The third time they replaced the fore-end assembly and it seemed all right.  I have shot it about 300 times since I got it back and after shooting 50 birds with it last night I saw I have the same problem.  I feel when I get it back this time I will either put it in the cabinet and let it sit or just sell it.  I have lost all faith and have no confidence in the gun or Remington's ability to fix the problem.
Good Shooting,
George

Barrel wear is normal on pump guns.  Just go shooting and quit worrying about it being pretty.

NO it isn't normal!!!!!!!  If it is why don't I have any on guns I have shooting for 35 to 40yrs???  Magazine tube bluing wear is normal but not barrel where the fore-end is obviously rubbing on it.
Good Shooting,
George

Swamapman,

I just got off the phone with Rem and they don't feel it is normal either.  They are now talking of replacing the gun for me as it the fourth time I have had to send it in for the same problem.  I will take their word for it not being normal and the fact I have been shooting the 870's for 40 yrs and never had the problem before.
Good Shooting,
George

My old 12 ga Wingmaster has one side of the wood slide a bit closer to the barrel than the other. On mine it's the left side closer than the right looking down the barrel. I suspect long use tends to cause it to twist slightly in that direction. But as of yet there is no wear on the barrel from it. I'd have to agree that wear on barrel isn't normal. I'd trust Remington to do what's right in this regard they always have for me.

I have one that's about 30 years old with the same problem.  Maybe I'll call them.

JMO, but that sure sounds like some got out with cross-threaded magazine tubes, which might be a little out of line with the barrel.   Monday/Friday gun syndrome ?  ;)

I received the new gun yesterday and in looking it over I don't feel I will have any problems with it.  The clearance on the forend to barrel is as it should be and the barrel goes on the receiver as it should.  They have changed the style of the rib to a cross hatched style and put a smaller white bead on the front.  Also the wood looks better it has some figure in it.

I don't believe Remington will replace your gun for you after 30 years Swampman.  Mine was under warranty and I had the problem since I bought it but you probably know better than me.  My other two 870 Wingmasters that I own and have owned since 1969 and 1974 have never had the problem and the way the forend on them is to the barrel I don't know how it would ever rub on the barrel.
Good Shooting,
George
