Ruger 44 SRH & Oregon Trails 240 swc
« on: September 07, 2007, 03:59:47 PM »
I've  tried to shoot the Oregon trails 240 swc in my Ruger SRH with fire lapped barrel and the groups at 50 yards are 3 - 5 inches with most loads.  They come sized .431 and are very snug going through the cylinder throats.  I ran them through a Lee .430 sizer and also lubeb with Lee liquid.  I loaded up some with 12 grains of Unique and went shooting this last weekend.  The jacketed loads were 1.5" - 2" at 50.  I tried the OT 240's with H4227 and 296 with the usual 3" groups.  But the Unique loads were incredible.  I had one 5 shot group, (one cylinder isn't good) that went .54".  Will start playing around with Unique and the Lee Liquid Alox.  My 30 herrett contender might just have to get serious to beat a revolver.

Good shooting, has your SRH had a trigger job too?

Yes along with an accuracy job by ssk.  After their work it did shoot jacketed alright, around 1 1/5" groups at 50 yards but the OT 240 were plate sized groups at 50.  It was a used gun and I sent it in soon after I got it.  I slugged the barrel and the restriction at the barrel threads was severe at best.  After over 200 rounds of lapping bullets, most with a courser grit, the restriction is about gone.  I have some 250gr from BTB I am shooting next.  I'm slowly getting things needed to cast my own.

I should say I resized some OT 240's and want to try them again.  It would be great if it weren't a fluke.
