troops who fought in vietnam were critized. it wasn't good. many now have mental problems from what they seen and heard over there. its not comparable to iraq unless the dems make it that way

our troops have always been  the best !
what i was saying is that the people of Viet Nam waited for us to with draw ( they could not defeat us ! ) and when we had gone they killed until one side was left !
If anyone has the guts to look ahead that is what will happen when we leave the middle east  ! We seem to always do that with the exception of Korea ! No wonder no one wants our help anymore !
I have never nor will i ever say anything disrespectful about anyone in our military , we should all thank God for them every day !

yes they are. the fact is we need to stay. the dems seem to be hypocritical about the president and haven't done anything. they get a lot of support and all they do is talk bad and the people believe them. its stupid. we withdrawed from vietnam because the people then were all about peace and all that junk. they believed that our troops sinned. they got treated badly and got spit on when they came home. we didn't support them. and if this happens then history will repeat its self. see its people they have no guts today. they are all crying about fighting them people over there and they care more about the enemy then our own troops. they seem to forget that we had attacks on our grounds. it will happen again when they get the chance.

i certainly hope that bin Laden is found and eliminated soon.  This guy is laughing at us here in the US.  Bush needs to pull out all the stops and allow the US military and the CIA to go after bin Laden.  If it is necessary to off a bunch of Pakistanis who are protecting bin Laden, so be it.  Use low yield nukes if need be.

The first mistake was made when the Kennedy bunch entered into a corrupt bargain with rogue Vietnamese generals to murder the duly elected leaders of South Viet Nam; Nhu and Diem.  Three weeks after the overthrow of Nhu and Diem, Kennedy was dead.  "He who lives by the sword will die by the sword, not necessarily at the hands of a more adept swordsman."

With all do respect, the Viet Nam war was totally mis-managed from the start by Lyndon Johnson, McNamara and Westmoreland.  From the very beginning weak-kneed US politicians were afraid of China.  Many strategic  targets like bridges, ports and power plants were never bombed for fear of China entering the war.  You cannot fight a war like they did and expect to win.   You cannot stop the war like Johnson did after Tet in 1968 and give the enemy a chance to re-group.   Westmoreland decided that the US could win a war of attrition in Viet Nam.   He was wrong-very wrong.

Actually Gen. Westmoreland was proved right in the long run ! he was accused of making up the numbers of VC killed !
when we got around to talking with the VC years after the war was over it was found his count was correct and we could have been closer to winning than we knew ! I feel Westmoreland was not a part of the wiz kids group !( bunch of bean counters)
we see it today , half the congress has to go to the war zone TO SEE FOR THEMSELVES , can they believe our military ? How many officers have a felony arrest vs congressmen ? who would you trust ?
no i don't think BL is laughing , if he is still alive he must feel like a rat in a trap getting ready to spring ! hope so anyway !

i know a retired very senior military officer who was asked to testify for Westmoreland when he sued CBS in about 1988 over their documentary, "The Uncounted Enemy."  He told Westmoreland's lawyer that he would testify-for CBS.  Westmoreland did lie about the numbers of enemy killed in Viet Nam.  All senior officers lied about it.  It was all part of McNamara's quantitative analysis.  He wanted an enemy death reported for X number of rounds fired.   If the phoney body counts could be believed, the US killed the entire population of North Viet Nam a couple of times over. 

Make no mistake about it, Westmoreland was a large part of the problem and was an intricate player in McNamara's silly game. 

The death count in Viet Nam had nothing to do with winning or losing the war.  The fact is that US offensive operations were stopped and started many times in response to "peace feelers" and other feel good stuff.  The US had the war won after Tet in 1968.  Then idiotic Lyndon Johnson and his lackeys stopped the bombing of the North in order to put out "peace feelers."  In 1973 Kissinger and Nixon surrendered US troops to Ho Chi Minh and condemned US POW/MIA folks to death.  This still makes me wanna puke.

maybe he was lucky cause in the 90's his numbers match the VC numbers and in some cases were Conservative !
maybe your senior  officer just didn't wish to be involved !

No, he was a very senior intelligence officer who held Westmoreland and Abrams in very low regard.

There was a huge disparity between the CIA and Military Intelligence estimates of the number of North Vietnamese army troops in the South.  The Johnson administration and the Army refused to believe there were as  many troops in the South as the CIA said there was.   


"Although many works disprove the conspiracy charge, General Westmoreland did subsequently acknowledge the potential significance of a public disclosure of intelligence information prior to Tet. Appearing on the NBC Today show in May 1993, Westmoreland explained: "It was the surprise element, I think, that did the damage. And if I had to do it over again, I would have called a press conference and made known to the media the intelligence we had.""
