Happiness is a full meat pole
« on: September 07, 2007, 09:20:05 PM »
Life is pretty good.  My 2 hunting partners and I headed out a week ago and did pretty well. First morning out, the other 2 decided to head downriver and I headed up.  They went around the corner and in a few minutes found twin brother yearlings standing at the water's edge. 3 shots and 2 moose were down within 30 yards of the water and 500 yards of camp.

One partner caught up to me gazing at a cow in a foggy slough. It took me a couple minutes to understand they had 2 moose down already. Guess it was a good thing they went that direction as I would have only been able to shoot one animal. Moose down by 7:30 AM and on the pole by 1 PM. 2 moose are a lot of work but 3 guys makes it nice and so close to the water is REAL nice. We were very happy campers.

2 more days of hunting and I had my chance. Poked into a dark slough and spotted one, no two cows! Hey that's a bull behind those two!  All we could see were antler tips and a nose.  They got nervous and headed into the deep grass - 5 to 6 feet high. Lost track of them but could hear them moving.  Next thing I know I see the bull quartering away. I quick try to get into position, try to gauge the distance, realize I'd be shooting across 2 sloughs and wonder if I should take the shot, still can't get the scope on him and poof he's gone.  By the time I get across the sloughs he's long gone and I'm kicking myself for being so slow and unprepared.  He was a lot bigger than the two we have hanging - as usual.

Weather got hot and flies were getting to the meat so we headed home.  Great weather for traveling.  Meat is butchered, sausage ground and all frozen.  2 moose for 3 families isn't too bad.

Now the weather is kicking up a gale, hard rain, I'm glad to be home but waiting for the storm to break.  May be a good time to look again.

Here's some pictures.  It doesn't get any easier than this - we were very fortunate.  Both guys use 7mm Rem Mag, 175 Rem core lok factory loads. One went down first shot - lungs and heart.  Second was hit high in shoulders then heart lung.  Had to throw rocks at momma to convince her to leave.

I'm sold on taking all the meat off you can before opening the body cavity.  We did one each way and the way I like is faster and cleaner I think.
