Squirrel Stew & Coffee
« on: September 09, 2007, 03:14:18 AM »
I was going to go to the woods yesterday but I started feeling punny.  I decided to make some stew and coffee out back instead.  All my stuff comes from junk shops and department stores.  Stew was one squirrel, one small potato, a few baby carrots, a little onion, a little celery, 2 chicken bullion cubes, and some black pepper.

sounds like a good lunch!

I did similar Sunday.  re-hydrated some dehydrated gumbo on the vienna sausage alcohol stove.   ;D

That is an Old Hickory.  Here's a sheath I made for my Queen Cutlery butcher knife.

cool, my sheath isn't quiet as fancy but it works. they are a better knife than knifes selling for 10 times the cost.  I every day carry a old hickory paring knife in a back pocket sheath. Tomorrow is the first day for dove and squirrel, so I'll have some squirrel in the next couple days.

I saw the title of this thread and just had to come on and post a big "Thank You!"

Reminded me of my days of youth when me and the buddies would go out a spend a day hunting.
We generally just roasted the rat over a open pit.

Later in life a couple of work buddies and myself would make regular trip out to hunt em.
We got real extravagant on how we would set up and prepare.

Anyway thanks for the memory jolt.

Swampman  great post. Me & my brother do walks in the woods this time of year with the 223s just to get out of the house. Theres always a cook stove & canteen cup in my pack. Never know what your gonna mEAT that day. Ive got a butane cookstove taped to a treestep, So when Im in the treestand all day I can boil up some water in the canteen cup & pour it into a dehydrated backpacking meal.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I posted this a few weeks ago.  You might like it too.

I spent Sunday in the woods.  I knocked a big grey squirrel off the roots of a Bay tree with my NEF Pardner and cooked him up in a little dollar store stainless pot that I carry at all times.  I had a package of Mexican flavored macaroni & cheese in my pack which went well with it.  Washed it down with some Crystal-Lite mixed up in my Clean Canteen.  A little Target trail mix for dessert was swell.  They've nearly cut and burned all my old haunt but my ancient campsite was left alone and the river bottoms still stand.  Sorry for the crummy cell phone pics.

Swampman, sometimes a man just need a few hours of peace & quiet. A time to commune with God and his creation. Smell a little wood smoke and drink a cup of coffee with a little wood ash in it. I do that a couple of times a week. Its good for body & soul.  :D Just makes me feel good all over. Byron

I can't help but feel sorry for them, until they're in my bowl and I'm enjoying the stew.  :D
Never knew before that they make scrumptious meals. Are there any other variants of cooking them?

One thing about the Old Hickory knife is that you can put an edge on one that will scare you!
Now please pass me some of that stew!

I used to save all my squirrel heads for an old timer. He loved squirrel head dumplings. He would crack the skull open with a spoon. Years ago My mom flipped out when  she spotted the bag of all the little fellows looking at her in the freezer. I'd save up a few dozen at a time to take to him. Never tried them though, just couldn't get past the thought of it, just like turtles.

My grandpa loved the squirrel brains and livers.
