I am thinking of reaming My 45-70 handi barrel to a longer caliber. I know that quick has few done this way and am just wondering whats out there. I'm thinking 45-90 to 45-120. What about case and reloading die availability?

If brass availability/cost is important, the 45-90 and 45-100 are probably the most practical of the bunch, it's the least expensive at about $90 a hundred, stepping up to the 45-110 and 45-120 the cost can double that since Starline doesn't offer it. Dies are available for all of them.

The 45-100 looks interesting. Another question is can I hand ream the chamber or do I have to have a smith do it? The smith might be the way to go anyway because I am planning on having a BC barrel shortened to about 26 inches and ported.

I wouldn't recommend doing it by hand, that's a fair amount of metal being removed, it would be a shame to ruin a good barrel to save a few bucks.
