Ruger Firearms
« on: December 11, 2002, 09:19:42 AM »
Well we got our wish. Greybeards has added a forum for us Ruger nuts. I have been given the honor of moderating this forum and am looking forward to it.
I think we should get the ball rolling and make them glad they added this forum.  I think I am right in saying alot  of us probably have at least on Ruger firearm that is special to us for one reason or the other.  Mine is a old model M77.  This was my first high powerd rifle other than a 30/30 my dad gave me for Christmas when I was 10.  I managed to talk my wife, we had only been married for a year, into buying it for me for my birthday.  She went down put it on laway and I got it in time for deer season that year.  Anyway lets get the ball rolling and make this a great place to learn and brag some from time to time.

I had one! #1B in 6 MM Remington a caliber I've long wanted but not many chamber these days.

Even with the fore end hanger work done it wouldn't consistently keep three on an 8.5" x 11" target sheet at 100 yards. Tried factory loads and a whole slew of what should have been good choices of reloads.

Gave up and traded it on a Browning Low Wall in .243. This little sucker puts dang near everything in groups of from 0.4" to 0.8" with bullets from 65 to 100 grains. Straight bone stock with nothing changed on it.

Yup GB had a #1. Maybe one uv yew guys do need to pick out my next one. I sure don't seem very good at picking them.

Let's see... two 50th Anniversary .22 standards, one Govt. Model .22 target, an Old Army and my first gun...a well worn 10/22.  The Old Army is my favorite...ahhh, the smell of black powder in the morning!

Well GB, it is just plain bad mojo.  I have the exact same problem with Remington.  This ain't meant to criticize the green and yeller, I guess they just don't shoot as crooked as I aim.  Sometimes life is like that.

For you fellers that are Ruger fans, especially fans of the No.1, you owe it to yourself to try the No.1 RSI's.  There ain't but 4 cartridges available, but they do cover quite a bit of hunting ground and the rifles are balanced extremely well, short and handle like a fine bird gun.  Check one out.

Let's see. I've got one or two lying around..

4" Security six in .357
an old MK1 .22 standard
a .223 mini 14 ranch rifle
an "old style" M77 .280 with the tang safety
just sold a synthetic .308 (I think it was demonicaly possessed)
and just picked up a 10/22 to build on as a project gun.

I love my Rugers, they "just feel right" in my hands. I want a Red Label O/U. I keep threatening to buy myself one. I told the guy at the gun shop that if I was ever to get married he could sell it to me just so it could be my last "big" purchase as a single man... :-D

We've got three.  Stainless Red Label 12 ga., Red Label 28 ga., and my wifes favorite, an early production mini 30 that shoots much better than it should with good handloads.  Right with our bolt guns at 100 yards.  Used to have a couple of #1s in 30-06 and 375 H&H.  Like to have em back.

When a better rifle is made, it'll say "Ruger" on
« Reply #21 on: January 05, 2003, 11:10:46 AM »
Add me to the list of "Ruger guys". Right now I have a No. 1S in .223 and a Model 77 Mk II V/T in same caliber. Have recently had a 1V and a 77 V/T in .22-250. Everyone an excellent rifle and none that didn't shoot "MOA" or better.

Had lots of trouble with the 1S when I first got it. It would shoot 2 into just about one hole and then "spread 'em around a bit". Looked into the Hicks thingy (and also the mods shown in one of my mags) but really wanted to float the barrel. So I simply put an aluminum washer between the fore end and the extension is mounts to and created a "target rifle". It probably ain't pretty, but it made all the difference in the world. The rifle now shoots most handloads into 1/2" at 100 and 1 to 1-1/2" at 200 when the old man does his job.

If there is a better, smoother bolt-action than the "new" Model 77, I sure haven't seen it. And I've had 3 V/Ts, all which regularly shot sub-1/2 MOA with good handloads.

For 30 years I was a Remington fan. Never could see what the big deal was about "controlled feed". Now that I've used a Ruger, I'm a total convert. Controlled feed is the best!

Well let me get in on this too.

I've got a couple of 10/22's kickin' around the back of my safe somewhere....

But let me tell you about my "White Elephant".

It's a Redhawk .44mag. 7 1/2" with a Hogue monogrip. Its fully dehorned and finished in satin Hard Chrome (gives it a light grey color). Beautifull trigger job and topped with a 30mm "Laseraim" red dot sight. I had a custom crossdraw belt holster made for it that cost me two arms and a leg. I almost sold it last year for about $ 400 less than I've got into it, but realized at the last minute that I really love that gun and could never part with it. Its gotten me 12 deer over the years and I expect to triple that number before I take my big dirt nap.

Well my favorite Ruger is a M77MKII Special Edition 35 Whelen that I aquired this year and it's a shooter. I don't handload so I'am confined to factory fodder. It will digest those 250gr Core-Lokts into bout 1/2"to 3/4" all day at 100yds if I do my part. All it really needs is a better trigger. My brother has a tang safety M77 in 264 Win. Mag one of 500 Ruger ran some years back. It shoots real well also with 140 Win P.P.'s
