sizing and lubing
« on: June 08, 2003, 07:30:35 AM »
well from lurking around and reading alot of posts (and wanting to get more bang for the buck) i have decided to start using cast bullets.  i have a guy who is made me 400 310 grain bullets to start with.   so i have a few questions.   what is the purpose of sizing?   this guy says that typically these bullets come out at a perfect size for most 44 mags; especially the rugers.   why would you want to size them then?   second question.  what is a good lube to use.   i want something clean and easy.  third ? -  if i keep these loads under 1000 fps do i need a gas check?
i am trying to do this as cheap as possible.   my plan is to use the bullets he made for me for hunting and d&j bullets of equal weight for practice (if they hit the same point of aim).   if the bullets work out good,  i will buy a mold and give it to my pops and then he can keep me in supply from that point on- dont feel too bad for him boys,  i plan on giving him my 10.5 inch blackhawk for father's day this year.   that way he will have motivation for making the 44 bullets.

1&3 -- You pretty much have to size them when they don't turn out so good or when the deign takes a GC. I've never had any luck trying to shoot GC designs without a GC. Plain base bullets that will go in a case and and chamber easily without sizing are better off without sizing.

2 -- Lee's Liguid Alox is an excellent lube that does not require expensive equipment to apply. However, it cannot remotely be described as clean. I have a half gallon of Rooster Jacket lube on order which is supposed to dry hard and work well on the lower velocity range pistol bullets. I'll try hard to have a report on how that works posted in the next couple of weeks.
