Mounting a red dot sight

I'm considering getting a 1x Aimpoint for one of my barrels. Should I get an Ultra scope mount so I can move it foreword a little? or does a standard work well enough?

Any recommendations as to model? I'm in South East Alaska (where 10 days without rain is a drought).

I have a couple of red dots mounted on Handi's and have used the regular scope rails but using a Ultra rail will not handicap you at all, it will give you more room to move it forward if you want to but I have not found it necessary....<><....

Granted, this is on my Huntsman muzzleloader, but since they are the same dimensions as the rifles, here is a picture of it with a Millet red dot on it, using a standard 5 slot rail.  No problems with it at all, and since there is no magnification, there is no problems with eye relief either.  Try it, you'll like it!!

I have had two mounted on Handis. One a 45-70 and the other my Sidekick muzzle loader. 

 I really like the speed they aford, the two eyes open shooting. What I dont like is they run on batteries. As the weather gets colder the life of the battery gets shorter and shorter. You need to have it on most of the time as a shot can offer itself and be gone in an instant.  I do not have any on any hunting gun anylonger for these reasons.

I do have one on every action sports gun I own!!  I have a couple on 22's. One on a 45/ 1911 and another on a Marlin camp Carbine 45 as well. They are GREAT for bullseye competitions as well.

I tried up a BSA once and loved it, but my cheek weld is not good enough and the parallax made it too inaccurate to hunt with, so I need to find another. Optics really can cost more than the rifle.

I had not though about the cold as we have not had any really cold weather around here for a while.

Your right on with the parallax. Some of these red dot scopes have it BAD!!

 I have had really good luck with ULTRA DOT and AIM POINT scopes. The U.D. is only a bit higher cost than average at say 150-175. The Aim-point is double that +.

If you don't have the cold, the battery issue is not as large a concern as the batteries will last plenty. it just seems the cold, below freezing really taps into the batteries ability to hold "juice".

"Ultra Dot", eh? I'd never heard of them. A quick google turned up a lot of advertisements, not much by user reports.
