.223 bullet question
« on: September 10, 2007, 02:52:08 PM »
I am looking for some inexpensive bullets to load in .223 Rem. Just for target shooting not hunting. Rem has some FMJ for $53/1000, Hornady the same bullet style for $64/1000. Anyone use either of these? Any opinions on Rem bullets? I generally use Sierra for serious shooting, but they are a bit steep for fun shooting. Any favorite place to buy them?
Thanks, Bob

I wish I had the answer to tell you, but you're on the right track buying by the 1000.

I've used the bulk Rem .223's for ground hogs for years. I've also used other caliber bulk bullets for hunting. I'm not bench resting so I do not need one hole groups at 100 yards. MOST of my hunting is only a 300 yard proposition. If I can't find a load accurate enough to kill a ground hog OR deer with a bulk bullet I' ll buy a new gun. And yes you are right to buy 1000's at a time.

I'll second that.

Generally, when I purchase anything other than bulk it's because I cannot find the weight or style I want or if I find the "box" types discounted.  For my needs, the accuracy and performance I get with bulk bullets is just fine.

In addition to other calibers. I've had good results with Winchester 46 HP's and Remington 50 and 55 gr.'s in the .223.

Consider Mid South house bulk bullets. I have used their premium 50 grain bullets with good results. They are about $35/500. 55 grain varmint night mare is $115/2000. This is a pretty good buy now days and they are a GBO sponsor. I am not sure who makes them for them, but it has got to be one of the big three, I suspect Sierra, but do not know for sure.

For blasting ammo  when your not consider about accuracy about any bullet will do. Just check the on line outlets and get the best price, it seem to change from day to day. Just keep a good back stop behind them and blast away.

The Remington 55gr softpoints easily shoot less than one inch in my Rem 700 or 788.  With prices going up I ordered another 500 a couple of weeks ago but they are on back order.  I was using up my Cabela's points.

What kind of target shooting are you doing? Is it really long range? If so, look at the boat tail options. But the one I can recommend for out to 300 yards is the Speer 50 grain TNT hollow point flat base bullet. It has truly excellent accuracy, and is economical when bought in bulk packs of 1000.

I'm not much on fmj's but whichever bulk bullet you can get the cheapest will work.  And some of them are surprisingly accurate.

Just ordered 1000 from MidSouth. I hope I like them, either way I'll shoot them.
Using them in a AR15's and H&R single shot. 100 to 250yds.
The AR will shoot a 1/4" group with Sierra 55g HPBT at 100yds. all day and the HR will do 1" all day with them.
They are more expensive for just messing around though.

I've shot the Remington, and Winchester bulk .224" bullets, and they both work very well. They shoot plenty accurate enough, and terminal performance was very consistent in all the variations I've tried.

The bulk bullets that  LaOtto222 mentioned look pretty good, and as soon as I'm ready to re-stock my .224 supplies, I think I'm gonna give them a try myself.

Well, I wouldn't wait too long. The supply of .223 brass and bullets seems to have dried up. Couldn't find any Rem or Hornady bulk packs at any of my usual haunts.

They shoot real nice from my rifles so I went and bought 2500 more.
Bargain at a times when everybody is out of 223.
