oklahoma hunting ?

 i might be moving to Lawton or Altus, Oklahoma there any public lands to hunt .prairie dogs or coyotes ? seen that you can't hunt dogs on state owned lands. any one have any info that might help ? also are there any hunting/fishing web sights for Oklahoma ? all i seen so far is for outfitters.

I can't comment on the prairie dogs but most landowners will let you hunt coyotes after the first of the year.  Most have arrangements with some one for dear season but after that they will usually welcome you.  Look for landowners with large tracts and cattle.  Ranchers in Oklahoma usually calve their cows in february and march.  Coyotes cruise cowherds in the mornings looking for afterbirth, dead calves, and as unbeleiveable as it may sound, they eat new calf poop because it is basically milk solids passed threw the system. i live in oklahoma and thats the problem the guys(deer hunters) that have it leased dont want u on it and the farmers that have a lott of cattle dont want a guy out there shoting around them tords them aspecaly when there is babby calves around and its  all be comeing $$$$$ signs in these farmers eyes u step foot on there property they want money any and for the deer hunters they pay enough if they shoot a cow or calve it will cover the cost and for prarie dog they would rather have a calve with a broken leg from a burrow than a HUNTER out shooting have a good time i live in farm country so i know how these farmes are and for the publice ground i dont think oklahoma has much of that u need hunting ground for deer turky phasents what ever come up to Grant county OK up buy manchester i am sure there is a little ground left for people that  lease ground

it just takes money to hunt here in Oklahoma any more to hunt lease ground any way, so sad i think all the states are getting like this when i have to pay a land owner to hunt i am done hunting but i will keep all my rifles

It is sometimes pretty to find a place to hunt in OK.  All the farmers have their places leased out to hunting clubs from Dallas, OK City and Tulsa.  Farmers whine about the hogs rooting up their wheat.  Then when you ask to hunt hogs on their places they say no.  i'm pretty lucky and have permission to hunt on several places but it took 25 years.  Also own a couple of places in another county.

it's a shame any more. it was a time when hunting was a poor mans sport. no more. greed is it now. every one wants to squeeze a few $$$ from every one. almost thinking of staying in Tennessee. There  is some public lands with in 20- 40miles . but then there extra pay to use them $ 29.00 for lic. then a extra 15 to 25 extra to hunt different public areas. but i guess it's that way almost all over. i don't hunt much at all but went turkey hunting . did not get a bird .but had fun calling in a tom. i have a very hard time sitting still.

If we had hogs up here in northern okla the farmers would shoot them there self and leave them lay or beg the few local hunters to come out a shoot them for them mind u there is a lott of the farmers here where i live that hunt there self to so that some of it them not leting a person hunt i hunt on a farmers land me and him hunt his ground and thank god it dont cost me a penny but i have lived here all my life 37 years and there is a few that still will let a local guy hunt and not make him pay

    The public hunting lands are elbow to elbow at times with hunters here in Oklahoma.    The landowners are approached by hunters who are seeking to lease the land for themselves.     I think bad experiences with other hunters is the main reason they are willing to pay to avoid confrontation with others.

    I freely allow a certain number of hunters on my land yearly.    Used to, they all seemed to get along pretty well.  But now days they all have a complaint about each other.

Im glad i live in michigan, there is state land every were and all you have to do is knock on doors to find permission to hunt the farms.

I would rather hunt on Private property than public land thats where i would think u would run in to A  Holes

  It's muzzle load season here right now.   A young man pulled in from a 3 hour drive before daylight this morning just to hunt private land.   He's sure a dedicated hunter.   He's already taken an 8 point last week.   Most hunters come on week-ends, but he's here practically every day.   A friend of the family has hunted here for several years, flew in from Alaska last week to spend 4 days out here hunting deer.   That shows me how they feel about hunting private property.

There is allot of public hunting here in Oklahoma to hunt yotes on and most of the landowners I have talked to out in the panhandle will let you shoot all the prairie dogs you want.

Now I see why our family friend from Oklahoma always drives up to my parents neck of the woods in Kansas to hunt. I would too if I didn't have the best of both worlds (Kansas and Maine) to hunt in.
