Who is taking their Mil Surplus hunting this year?
« on: September 11, 2007, 04:18:48 AM »
If so what are you taking, what ammo you are using, and is it modified i.e. scope, stocks or are you taking her as is?

For my self I will be taking my Lee Enfield S No4 Mk1* using 180grn Sierra Pro hunters loaded to right around 2460fps ( dont have a chroni so have to trust the books). For this year I installed an ATI composite stock just to save the wood the wear and tear. I am using the original sights as of right now dont have time to mount a scope and get it sighted in before the season starts.

So lets hear it ;D

I have a K 31 with an old weaver 3x scope and St. Marie mount that will be used for varmints and deer this year.  Shoots great and I have a lot of Swiss fmj ammo for varmints and some Hornady 7.5 soft point for deer.  Have not started loading for it yet.

Anybody buy 7.5 brass?  From who and what do you think of it?

#4 Mk. 1, with plastic (not sure which one), barrel cut-off behind front sight, Weaver mount, Simmons scope, Santa Fe 5-shot magazine.  I picked it up last fall for $79.95 without the scope and it shoots great.  Federal ammo.

Well, it's either going to be my sporterized M38 Swede 6.5x55, the sporterized SMLE No4Mk1, a plain jane M48A, or who knows.  The 6.5 shoots S&B 131 gn soft points into one hole at 100m; the 303 prefers a 180 gn softpoint at 2540'/sec, and the M48 also takes the 196 gn S&B very well.  Ah well, we'll see............Mikey.

I'll be taking my ghetto, bubba'd SKS with homemade scope mount drilled and tapped.  With the work that I have put into this rifle, I want to really use it.  That and I am curious about the Hornady 150 SP's at such a comparatively low speed.

It might not be traditional, but it is mine.

This is my sporterized 96 Swede 6.5x55. Took two impalas end of August. I use Norma brass with 140gr.
Speer hot-cor loaded to 2550 fps. Complete penetration on both of them and both of them went down within 20 yards.

This is end of the season. It is going to be a long wait for next year's season!!!

My 6.5 Swede that I made into a scout rifle with my own designed mount ( Like the old Ashley system with a tube expoxied on the barrel with a scope mount on the tube)  and I  shortend the barrel to  20 inches. It took a nice doe for me Two years ago. I may try my K31 also as it has a scout scope set up on it too though that one would be shooting cast bullets at close range.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I scoped my Swiss K-31 and got some soft points last year but didn't get it sighted in properly. I hauled it to deer camp but it got dark before I could get it zeroed.  I had to use my 6.5x55 Encore to fill my tags. I should have the K-31 ready to go this year.  The FNM softpoint ammo has a different POI than the GP-11.

I purchase the 7.5 brass from Graf.  Also, when I find it I pick up 284 Win cal brass and resize it to 7.5
The best bet is to watch for Graf to get another shipment of 7.5 brass in, then buy all you can afford.  It's good stuff and reasonably priced.

From my stand, I'll be using my 7.5 Swiss with one of Darrels Scout Mounts.  Love that gun.  While walking, I'll be carrying a Moisn M-44.  I pulled the bayo off of it.  With the blade gone, it is such a sweet carry carbine and shoots right to point of aim at 50 yrds with my cast loads.

Both guns will be fed Graf brass stuffed with some 2400 powder and one of my home cast 165 grn flat points.  This is a good killer and accurate.  Not to mention easy on my shoulder! ;D

Bluebayou is that SKS mount steel or aluminum.  Makes complete sense.  SKS's are rugged, reliable, and like you said with a heavier bullet, can take deer and hogs.  Did you drill and tap the top for the mount or just drill through and use a short bolt?  Also, did you drill and tap the sides yourself?
Thanks

Thanks for the interest.  I bought a cheap import drill press ($50) because I wanted one anyway.  Using this press I clamped a piece of angle steel to the side of the receiver and drilled 4 holes.  Someone suggested drilling through both pieces simultaneously and tapping them simultaneously.  Time will tell if it works well.  I figure if nothing else then I can enlarge the holes on the mount if it doesn't hold.  I don't plan on taking the mount off though.

It is a jigsaw puzzle to remove the bolt and bolt carrier but it can be done.  The two biggest tricks were a) to get it low enough for scope use, but high enough to remove the bolt and b) to gently tap the mount once finished to get on paper at 100 yards (it was offset to the left on my first trip to range.)

This morning my nephew bagged his first moose with my sporterized mod 1908-98 Mauser in .35 whelen.

In two weeks (first week in October) I'll be hunting elk with it.

If I manage my dream of a muzzleloader triple play, whitetail buck, Russian boar, and black bear, I'll get out me Model 96, stuffed with 129 grain Horadys, and a starting load of whichever powder this 1899 Obendorf, likes best.  ;D

Bluebayou, what thickness is the metal you used.  We have a shop at work, and this looks simple enough to do after hours.

None of my SKS's, AK's, SVT's , Ausi Lithgow's, Ishapore Enfield's, Mas's, or any of the Mosin's (Polish - Russian - Fin) will ever see the field. There all to dam heavy to lug around all day. I just a soon as sell'm off and buy me some new Handi's, levers, or a nice light mountian rifle.

Dixie Dude,
It was a piece of galvanized angle steel about .080 in thickness.  It measures 3.6 inches long and 1.25 high.  The angled piece for the top (to screw the Weaver mount to) was cut to .60.  These were dimensions that I just cut to based on trial and error with trying to make permanent mount and still being able to remove the bolt carrier.

My deal was why pay Choate $40 for something that I can make myself?  They don't even provide you with screws to mount it apparently.

Good luck on that.  The mount, after being cut to those dimensions, is drilled and tapped so that it sits tightly against the wood of the stock and is 1 inch from the rear of the receiver to clear the steel webbing inside.

Thanks Bluebayou, I have thought of doing the same thing.  I just wanted it high enough to see the iron sights and maybe have a piece flair over the top to keep ejected shells from hitting the scope.  I could use a very short scope.

This old school Bushnell Banner is perfect for me, with its goofy dimensions:

I found it used, I could move it back an inch or so, but then it is too close to eye for comfort.  The Yugo stock is not scope friendly.  Is weird because it doesn't have enough drop, but is too low for good scope picture.  Plus it is too short.....wasn't made for a scope.

Anyway, the empties do not hit the objective on the scope in this position, it is all a compromise when kludging stuff together.  Hope that it turns out.  My hardest bit was getting barrelled action and clamped on scope mount aligned on drill press without movement.  Had to build jig with 2x4 real quick to support muzzle end of barrel while drilling.

Was a fun afternoon with no worries about work though.

I'll be using a mil. surplus rifle hunting rifle for the first time.

Rifle: K-31 with Uncle Mike's slip on recoil pad, nylon web sling & sight paint. No scope.
Ammo: 174 gr. Soft point from Wolf Gold Line (very accurate in my rifle)

Can't wait!

Whoa, some really nice rifles are hittin the bush this year! Cool stuff guys!

Not sure yet here. Took two deer with my Garand, love how it carries, and my favourite sights of any milsurp. This year though...I have a Lyman Deerstalker and ordered a Buffalo Classic, so I want to try those out. I suppose if a milsurp is coming out it will be my Kar 98k, found out in a match that I shoot it better than I thought I would. Not as well as my Garand, but well enough to make me happy :)

Might just take my trusty No4MK2 out for bear. Have taken 3 deer with her in years past and she currently can keep 3 rounds under 6 inches consistently at 300 yards ( she's as issued) ;D.But she does seem a bit much for deer... ::)

I'm using my bubba's mosin M44 for a brush gun this year for black bear...It's short enough to swing around quickly, heavy enough to use as a club in case it fails, and plenty accurate for what I'm using it for (~2" groups @ 100yds, open sights). Any shots I'm likely to seem are going to be withing 75yds or so.

My father is using his sporterized 1901A1 he completely refinished about 30 years ago.
It's been re-barreled th .35 whelen, with a custom walnut stock with ebony tips.  8)

One of the guns I will alternately be using in Maine this year is a Remington Rolling Block in 7x57. I have loaded some lead bullets and will be trying for a shot under 100 yards (more like 40-50 most likely) with the as issue gun and the original sights. I also have a newly acquired Buffalo Classic to try on some days. To many guns to hunt with, to little time to use them....<><....:)
